I recently recieved a virus from a flsh drive that I ordered. For more info on that venture go here: forums.pcworld.com/thread/53140?start=0&tstart=0 Anyway, this stinks and system restore didn't clear the air. Also, due to the warning that just popped up, I am going to hazard a geuss that the virus is not really quarantined like my symantec says it is. The warning say that real time protection has been disabled, and I didn't disable it. Anyway, how do I get it out of quarantine so that my far more recent AVAST! can toss this virus in the trash?

Hey Grr8008, First, you need to dump Symantec ( Norton ). To do this, use Add / Remove programs. Once that is done, then go to their site and use their removal tool. Yes you need to do this and be careful of what else it may remove. Once that is done, i would recommend a cleaner such as CCleaner to further clean up the mess. After that, Then you can make sure that Avast! is up to date then run it. That was a mistake to have both Symantec & Avast! both in there and actually hurt your protection. coastie

:D Hi :

Since you seemed to have "ignored" the Advice I gave in the other Thread, I am hesitant to

"offer" anything again . IF you are talking about the "Win32.SillyFDC" you mentioned in the

other thread, you should realize it can be a very difficult piece of malware to completely

remove and antiVIRUS programs should NOT be the PRIMARY program to use . Since it

came from a Flash Drive, did you use the "Flash Disinfector" I recommended in the other

thread ? The next Approach should be the use of antiSPYWARE/antiTROJAN programs,

such as Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware ( www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php ) and

"SUPERAntiSpyware" ( [http://www.superantispyware.com] ), BOTH of which come in

FREE Version(s) .

Spirit, please get a hold of yourself. No one "ignored" your suggestion. Did you maybe stop and think that your suggestion may not have even been seen? Do you know how many times I have made suggestions to individuals that either go unanswered or get overlooked?

Your suggestions are not the be all and end all of suggestions. Stop coming in this Community with this "greater than thou" attitude. The information you provide has help numerous people within this Community but your communication of that information is appalling.

Why am I dumping symantec? And why is it hurting my computer to have two? In response to spiritwind I did not ignore your post. However I would like to first exhaust some more well known routes first as the virus is quarantined and also I don't want to risk the possiblilty that this is a so to say, problem that may hurt more than it helps. After all, if a AV software will think it's a virus... Plus this virus is not a high level problem.

Hi, You should never have two Anti Virus programs, or anti spyware programs running actively at the same time. It will do more harm than good. You can have more than one installed, just only one running. Symantec is a resource hog and for any better way of putting it, will take over your computer. It also doesn't play well with other security apps. Avast! is a very good AV program and to be honest, that is what I am running in here. You must remove Symantec / Norton completely before iinstalling another app to clean your computer. As was recommended www.SUPERantispyware.com & www.Malwarebytes.org to clean up your computer.. I would ciontinue to use Avast! and install the paid version of SUPERantispyware for real time antispyware protection. coastie

After running CCleaner, I would install Avast! for the anti virus as it is free and very good ( I am Running it ). As for SUPERantispyware, you can install the FREE version but it doesn't offer real time protection, you will need the Paid version ( $19.95 I think ). Yopu can also install malware bytes as a addition scan option as it doesn't offer real time protection, but is a very good thing to have for an additional scan. You might see some improvement in your performance as Symantec ? Norton tends to use a lot resources and lug the computer down. These are lightweight programs. coastie

All systems are go, although I couldn't find the removal tool. I ran CCleaner, gained 888.2 mb of hard drive space and as I type I have malwarebytes and AVAST searching for that pesky piece of Malware, although I think Symantec destroyed it just before it walked out the door. (It said it was deleting the files in quarantine!.)

Should've done this before. If you should encounter any problems with your new Apps then uninstall them and run this:

service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2005033108162039 , then you can reinstall them. If you used Add / Remove programs and then ran CCleaner induding the registry part, then you may not have any problems as that thing is a pretty good cleaner. You sure did gain a lot of space which is good. coastie

I don't think any of those would have worked. I had symantec corporate edition, not any of the norton products listed.

Oh. I have no knowledge of that thing. I think CCleaner probably took care of things. There is a second Freebie that is equally as good and will get stuff that CCleaner misses. That is ATF Cleaner, www.atfcleaner.com. I think you're alright though. coastie

I will post if I find anything. Also don't worry about the points. They will be awarded...after I am done with those annoying USB drives. Also this will be kept marked as unanswered. Just in case the problem crops up again. For now...thanks!

Hopefully it won't. If you have a question someone is always here, don't know about late at night though. I have to get my beauties. :D If there is anything there, SUPERantispyware or Malwarebytes will pick it up. As for those pesky USB things, someone else has already given you a utility to try with them. have a good one, coastie

Posted Image Hi :

When it comes to using a "Removal Tool" for the Symantec Corporate Edition, Best Info is

that it is called "NoNav" ; Best to start with the Info at

uts.cc.utexas.edu/~lee99/NoNav.pdf ( assuming you have a PDF reader on your

computer ) . Version 2.51 of this appears to be at

[http://www.cat.pdx.edu/windows/nonav-instructions-for-windows.html] . There is Info that

there is a "Version 2.6" that can be ordered from Symantec !?

HOWEVER, there is Info that there is a "later" Removal Tool called "CleanWipe" and the

Best Site I found about this that also has the program available for download is at

Thanks for the help everybody. My scans detected only two little rootkits that were promptly picked by their roots by AVAST! I was wondering what kind of firewall I should use in order to finish off new totally free security suite now on my computer.

Does anyone know of a good firewall as Symantec had one but now I am in the open again. If no one replies or even if someone replies then I will give out the points.
