If this post is off-topic or inappropriate then someone let me know.

Having a PC problem here and can't identify whats wrong. Have 4 computers here and this very old one is my primary link to the internet, as use the other 3 for serious things and can't contemplate getting malware on them. The PC is running Win-2000 SP-4 with most updates and PC-cillin antivirus. Within the past month I find that I can still access my home page OK (PCWorld) but if I then click on any article or link there the 90% result is that within seconds of a newpage download starting, IE locks followed by a request to debug. When I click "no" then IE unloads. If I click "yes" to debug then Debug shows but I don't know what to do with it. Don't have this problem if I stay away from PCWorld. As one-time experiment I tried a different computer using W2K with same configuration & did not have this problem(s).

Just to access this forum & post this comment required 5 attempts/restarts, so need to resolve this.

Suggestions or comments welcome!

Have you installed any new software/hardware lately? Just this last week I had to install soft software on the server so my youngest son could use a new HP all in one unit with his laptop. Man did that thing install a load of junk, order supplies, support and a bunch of junk. Really slowed down a restart and held up things. Had to go back and uninstall the unneeded stuff and that cured the problem.

Thanks for the response---good question there but actually don't know the answer. Approximately the same time this started (plus or minus a week or so) I bought/installed an Iomega 500 Gb network HD and configured software on all 4 computers. If that is the problem then I wonder why the other computer I have home networked don't experience the problem (one other also has dual-boot for W2K and XP and that computer is the unit previously mentioned as test-bed, it is also connected to the new external HD yet shows no problems).

My first questions to you are:

- What version of Internet Explorer are you using?

- Have you tried any other browsers?

- Do you have any add-ons installed within Internet Explorer?

Sorry about posting this to the wrong forum.

Using IE6 w/ sp1 as believe that is the most recent Microsoft version that runs with W2K. Don't have & never used any other browsers. I have installed MS updates for IE & Outlook but have not installed any other add-on's to IE6 and don't see anything on my IE toolbar or elsewhere(?)

:D No need to post it two. I got it the first time. :D

I have not used Windows 2000 in a very long time and the same applies to Internet Explorer 6. Give me a moment and let me do a bit of research about version compatibility.

Okay, after doing some digging, I confirmed that upgrading to Internet Explorer 7 is definitely not an option. However, at least as just a test, determining if another browser works for your needs is an option. Opera (available by clicking this link ) is compatible with Windows 2000.

As I mentioned, just as a test, download and install this browser to see if you have the same issue. Just to confirm, when you stated, "Just to access this forum & post this comment required 5 attempts/restarts, so need to resolve this," I presume you mean five restarts of Internet Explorer and not your computer, correct?

I used to have to use IE6 running on Win2K when replying to posts in the community at work. It was a real pain. I never had that problem, but IE6 and Clearspace don't like each other. Shoot IE7 and Clearspace don't either.
Get Real - another one to try is Firefox.

Thanks to both of you for the replies.
These are typical of error messages received under IE6 while trying to access this page....

Well, have 3 similar/different images to show but can't get the image insert process here to accept all...

To answer questions, yes IE is all that crashes, W2K OS shows no problem.

I have downloaded & installed both Opera & Firefox. Running each one time loads this forum-page without any error, so apparantly it is a problem wiyh my install of IE6.

Unless someone has more ideas of what I can do to fix this (I hope) it looks like I need to either abandon PCWorld as homepage and/or resolve to not use IE6 if I don't!

Further to my most recent post about testing Opera & Firefox. I have closed both and then reverted to IE6. Doing this twice and each time IE6 now functions without producing errors!!!!!!!!
Something apparantly corrected or overwritten with install of these 2 other browsers??????

GOOD!

OOPS---not good.....

Restarted the computer and now the IE6 problem has returned.

And Coastie, I cannot find any references to IE6 W2K service packs beyond SP1, though MS has some upgrades & fix's on their downloads page. Please give me any links that you might remember....

Hey GetReal, I ran Win2k pro until 2004. If I remember correctly, they were up to SP6. I know it went as far as SP4 for sure. coastie
