Too often I have pulled out a handfull of my hair trying to figure out why these things come up and why loading to a different partition or drive cures the fault. I can only offer what I have run up against and what I've diagnosed as the fault. Many times when software gets loaded it will set aside a specified size for its working space. Sometimes there is not enough unassigned space to make this contigous and it has to assign the area piecemeal and this can lead to many jumps from open areas to other open areas to assign that space. This can lead to a lost buffer bit of where one area starts and stops and things get lost. As I said, some programs don't like to play nice with each other and in some cases, the loading sequence needs to be adjusted somewhat to get everything happy. When I make a new build and begin loading the OS and all the other programs for the initial hardware, it usually takes a half dozen or so tries to get everything working right. It can be a hassle and in most cases I do a work around by loading the OS to a smaller partition designated as the "C" drive, another big partition to load the working software unto and a third to put the data on.

Yes, mjd, it's frustrating! But this may be a classic case of it wasn't broken and I tried to fix it!

To mph (and anyone else)... I uninstalled Open Office. It took a while and there are still file fragments in the c:Programs file of Open Office. I've tried to delete them, but get a message that it's not allowed. Doesn't matter... the major part is gone.

After doing this, I installed and opened Shipping Assistant with no problem. Whether it was the space issues mentioned by mjd, or a conflict issue also doesn't matter, since everything is now working. I have advised both the Open Office team and customer support at USPS.com of this issue, as I'm probably not the only one who will deal with it.

I've installed Star Office 5.xx and MS Word '97, and again, everything is working just fine. Since I now have more RAM than on the old computer, what I had that worked okay now works SPLENDIDLY!

It's been fun going through this with you. It's is so nice to know that total strangers will still go out of their way to help other total strangers.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Hi slevy. I cannot speak for everyone but personally, it is a honor to help those that find themselves stuck with a technical problem. I cannot resolve every issue but I will always make sure every avenue is explored before giving up. It's funny. The way one treats a strangers shows more about that person than how he or she would treat his or her family and friends.

I am glad it turned out exactly as mjd suggested. If you ever have any other questions, please let us know.
