Which OS are you using? I assume Windoze of some sort. But there are a variety of options...but it will depend on the OS somewhat.
In general, you can use a VNC software program (some of which are free), but how you set it up will depend on the OS and how your home computer connects to the Internet (i.e. do you use a router and/or a software firewall).
There are free options, but it might be easier to setup with some paid options.

SMAX... Thanks for your response the OS that I'm using is VIsta and my computer is connected via cable, router ...and sercurity software which is CA sercurity 07 .....any suggestions
The first issue is software. As noted, the "cheap" way would be to use a free VNC. But, this will likely also be that hardest thing to setup. If you want to do this path, then we can likely find some tutorials and a VNC program to use.
The next step would be "proprietary" programs such as PCAnywhere (http://www.symantec.com/norton/symantec-pcanywhere), Timbuktu Pro (http://www.netopia.com/software/products/tb2/), etc. These will be the more costly options, but setup might be quite a bit easier to do.
The other potential cheap option is Windoze Remote Desktop. It is built into Vista Business, Vista Ultimate, and Vista Enterprise (http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-vista/features/remote-desktop-connection.aspx).
The last option would be the likes of GotoMyPC and such. These types might be the easiest options (see below), but will generally likely cost money.
The next step is setting up your router and other security to allow the connection to work. This will also depend on what type of ISP you have. You said you have cable modem service. This means that most likely you have a dynamic IP address. If so, then the first hurdle is having the proper IP address to use to connect back to your system. If the router stays on all the time, then most likely your IP address will not change much or at all. If so, then you can find it out and write it down and use that...but there is still that chance that it will change on occasion. This is where the likes of GotoMyPC might be the best option...it appears that they have a way to address this issue (it is probably a lot like Dynamic DNS services...which should be another option potentially).
Then you have to setup your router to port forward the appropriate port(s) to the proper computer. This will vary depending on which option you choose.
And last, if you are running a software firewall, which seems to be likely with the CA Security 07, then you have to set the firewall to allow the remote connection to pass through. Depending on the firewall software and other factors, this could be easy or hard.
Most likely, the easiest path would be to go with some service like GoToMyPC, but you will likely have to pay for that service.
