Many years ago, I used a utility called "The Troubleshooter" - made by ForeFront Direct, Inc. The utility was useful for obtaining basic information on what might be wrong with a PC's hardware without relying on any one specific OS or its internal calls. ForeFront now seems to only be in the educational services business.
(Please correct me if I'm wrong.)

What might be the best modern-day alternatives to "The Troubleshooter"? Something that (1) boots and runs from a USB thumb drive (or diskette?); (2) does not rely on any specific OS; and (3) returns basic hardware information, including PCI designations, addressing and IRQ conflicts, DMA assignments, and so forth.

Thank you,

Fnord

Hello,

I too used troubleshooter. It was a very useful tool. I still have a copy and I still use it to wipe an hd.
I used ERD Commander for just about everything but I'm retired now. Written by Winternals. We had ver. 2002 for older OS's and ver. 2005 for newer systems.
Someone told me that Microsoft bought their Company. I don't know for sure. ERD 2005 had lots of utilities including password reset for Servers and PC's

Good Luck
