I have some video files on the computer that has been corrupted. The
videos were from my Samsung camcorder. They were ok until I installed
this arcsoft Media Impression software on the computer. It is from my
new Polaroid digital camera. The formats on the videos have been
altered. I can only hear the sound. I cannot see the video even after I
have deleted the software. Transferring videos from SD card to computer
still yields the same thing. It looks like only videos from Samsung
Camcorder are affected. My photos and videos from my Sony camera are
still ok. Is there anything I can do to repair the video files and/or
solve the issue?

what program are you using to play the avi files? windows media player? if so, is it version 11?

try vlc media player

it sounds like you lost a codec that makes the video part of the avi file work

Thank you very much for the info. It turns out to be a codec issue and has now been resolved. You have suggested that I use VLC media player. Does it work with all available formats on the market? If I use it on a computer with no Windows Media Player, can I see videos without the appropriate codec?

Thanks in advance.

vlc can play just about anything so yes it'll play almost all of the media files

as far as i can tell, vlc is independent so it should play the video regardless of windows media player

Unless it is a video file in Windoze Media Player format with DRM protection...for that you will likely need the WMP.
