What would we call that one poster who feels the need to poke at everyone else's bubbles or spoil things by being over-critical? They can't let anyone just have fun, they have to poke holes in everything...like the kid at the birthday party who insists on telling everyone how the magician did his trick or the guy who turns every conversation into a debate, from the origins of life to the new Star Trek movie?
And what's interesting is, I've heard people get more het up about the latter than the former...:)

Hopefully, you're not referencing to my post... I don't think I was guilty of anything other than a long post.
An over-critical spoiler who turns EVERYTHING into a debate... religion, Star Trek, everything?
Well, all I can think of is "Public Investigator"... indeed, it's a terrible suggestion... I'd reccomend asking someone more witty.
People get more upset about attacking Star Trek than religion? .....to quote the fanboys, "O_O" .
Anyway, were you referencing to me? I wasn't trying to be over-critical. If I wanted to be critical, that would mean I didn't like the article. Since I loved the article as opposed to merely liking it, I'd have nothing to attack! Even if I didn't like it, my parents forbid online battles for my safety's sake.

Debating is great, but I guess we just have to know when to quit. I guess a good name could be the Spoiler (how original!).
Yes, I know of people who take things like Star Trek more seriously than religion. :) I've seen it more with Star Wars, to the point of lobbying religion forums to post a board about Jedi as a reiigion. Click the link below for proof. :)

As for the article, I guess I have seen them all and then some. I have been accused of over posting ( long winded) on occasion as well. Oh well, it happens. We have a lot of characters on this forum, and it makes for an enjoyable time for the most part. coastie

"And the worst of all are the ones who have nothing useful to say, so they post a 14-page rant about other people's meaningless babble. WTF??"
What snarky thing to say. I hope you don't mean that. Fact is, most people think PC World has A LOT of useful things to say. We like to have a little fun sometimes, too, like in this slideshow. If you're that unhappy with us, I suggest you read, and comment, elsewhere. -Mark Sullivan

Remember that multiplication is really a special form of addition, and PHI represents a coinciding of the processes of addition and multiplication. What was a linear accumulation suddenly becomes a square (?+1 = ??), and there is a leap of growth. In the plant, the simple additive growth in the stem suddenly erupts into a flower. When such a moment occurs in the context of spiritual development, it is called enlightenment. In our brains, the additive accumulation of data suddenly blossoms into a genuine understanding. There is a development from points to lines to planes, and finally, to volume. This is demonstrated by simultaneously adding and multiplying in the mathematical equation:
? + ?? = ?? = ? x ??

Snarky? Good heavens! I have never been snarked before. Is it bad to be a snark? Should we, the people, who being enlightenment to PC World forums, be offended at the mere possibility of being snarked? What precautions should we take to avoid being snarked. And what, heaven forbid, should we do to keep from snarking others? SNARK NOT, AND YE SHALL NOT BE SNARKED!! Being snarked sounds absolutely hideous. You would have to be a Madman to snark someone. I can just picture my tombstone now...HERE LIES JEFFREY BARKER, HE WAS SNARKED.:^0

Evildave -- For your information, we wrote our article before we knew anything about Mike Reed. When someone pointed out to us that he had done some similar work, we contacted him to see if we could use some of his illustrations to fit with our "characters." He graciously gave us permission to do so. Since then we have hired Mike to create original illustrations for another feature, and we will likely have Mike provide illustrations for future PCW features. He's obviously a very talented guy. So no it was not simply a "cut and paste" job, as you say. But thanks for your concern over Mike's compensation.
Thank you for reading.

Sometimes long ago, PCWorld updated their forums software from something to something else... Alas during the upgrade process, some essential information got lost in the translation?
Please forgive me for um, quoting WinTard, who would ever want to do that? Not me! No the purpose is to correct the elusive information lost during Divine Proportion conversion...

Divine Proportion
The Divine Proportion, also called the Golden Ratio, and has been designated by the 21st letter of the Greek alphabet, PHI φ (21 is, of course, a Fibonacci number). PHI is an irrational number created by the successive convergents of numerators and denominators following the Fibonacci sequence. To demonstrate this, take any Fibonacci number and divide it by the previous Fibonacci number. For example, 377 / 233 » 1.61803. The further you go in the Fibonacci series with this method, the closer you approach the Divine Proportion, which is equal to
PHI (φ) =( √5 + 1 ) / 2
Being an irrational number, it extends far beyond 1.618033988749894...but is often approximated at 1.618. The ratios of successive Fibonacci numbers tend toward PHI, so PHI is the limit of the sequence 2/3, 3/5, 5/8, 8/13, etc. These ratios approach, but never equal PHI. Mathematicians measure how "irrational" a number is by seeing how quickly the differences between these fractions and PHI shrink toward zero. It so happens that they shrink more slowly for PHI than for any other irrational number. This is why number theorists say that PHI is the "most irrational number." Two fascinating properties of PHI are seen in its reciprocal and its square:
1 = φ - 1 or 0.618...
φ
φ² = φ + 1 or 2.618...
Remember that multiplication is really a special form of addition, and PHI represents a coinciding of the processes of addition and multiplication. What was a linear accumulation suddenly becomes a square (φ+1 = φ²), and there is a leap of growth. This is demonstrated by simultaneously adding and multiplying in the mathematical equation:
φ + φ² = φ³ = φ x φ²
