I want to use Craigslist but cannot respond to their classifieds because they use Outlook Express, as does many web sites. I switched from I8 to Firefox, which I like. So my question is, can I get set up for Outlook while keeping Firefox and how does Windows live fit in to this equation?

A couple things:

First, you don't have to use Outlook Express. I'm wondering if your computer by default is set to run Outlook Express as the default mail application. So to send a contact to someone in craigslist, it asks for Outlook Express, but in reality all you REALLY need is a mail client and a contact e-mail address.








Firefox and Outlook are different problems, and don't acknowledge that either or exist, so you can run Firefox and Outlook separately.










Also - Windows Live is simply an extra e-mail service provided by Microsoft, and I believe that Windows Vista has Live builtin, so if you have a "Live" account you should be able to open the Live client in Vista "assuming you have it," and run from there.

So, when I am on a site, not just Craigslist, and a Outlook Express pop-up window comes up, are you saying that I have to write the e-mail address down and then go back to my e-mail, type it in and send it? Thanks for your input

If you click on an email address on a website or frequently one of the "contact us" links, it will generally open up your default email client and open a new message window with the email address already entered in (that is unless the website uses a webpage form for their contact us stuff). As noted, it seems your default email client is set to be Outlook Express. If you want to change this, then while in Internet Explorer, go to the Tools menu and select Internet Options. You should get a window that looks like this (I am assuming since you don't have Vista that you have XP):

You can then set the E-mail item to what ever email client you want to use. And then when you click on email links, it should open up a new message window with the email address in YOUR email client.

I'm not completely understanding. Craidgslist, for examplee has no e-mail address. It is strictly outlook express. So, I don't what to change outlook to.

I am assuming that you access CraigsList by way of a browser. Here is a listing for example;

In that listing, at the top, there is a "reply to" item with a link (which is an email address) after it. I am assuming this is what you are talking about.

If so, then click on that link will open your default email client, whatever that is set to.

I understand my tools > options screen and it looks like the one you sent. Mine is set for Outlook as the default e-mail _. I do use XP.



What I didn't understand is "setting the email client that I want to
use". What is my "e-mail Client?" I have two e-mail addresses, one is with Yahoo and the other is with gmail. should I use one of these and how would I enter them into the boxes in my Tools>Internet Options screen? Thanks, John

You email client will be the program that you use to check your email. Do you use Outlook? Outlook Express? Thunderbird? Or do you use an Internet browser to log into a website to check your email?

Smax, I'm still not clear. I went to INTERNET PROPERTIES > PROGRAMS and see:

choices which are EXPRESS, OUTLOOK, and WINDOWS LIVE.

Well, I am always browsing on Firefox and have found that an easy way to get to my Yahoo e-mail account is to go up and click the Firefox' "BOOKMARKS" button and click my bookmarked "yahoo" icon which quickly takes me to my yahoo e-mail interface (already logged in).

Yes.

This means that you access your email using a web-based interface...you use an internet browser to get your mail.

Craigslist has email addresses that are set with an HTML link. That link is designed to open up an external email client and put the email address in the To: field of a new message. But, you do not use an external email client...you use the browser. As a result, I don't believe those links will work for you.

Your only option is to either copy (using copy and paste) the email address and then go to your Yahoo (or Gmail) account and paste the email address into a new message...or write down the email address and then go to Yahoo and type the email address into a new email message.

The only other option would be to setup an external email client (such as Outlook Express or Outlook or Thunderbird, etc). To do that, you would need an email account that has either POP or IMAP access. Yahoo's free email accounts DO NOT have either POP or IMAP access...thus, to my knowledge, you can not use your Yahoo email accounts in an external email client unless go upgrade to a paid account. Gmail, OTOH, DOES both POP and IMAP access, I believe. Thus, if you wanted to use your Gmail account for all those email links on webpages (Craigslist and any others), then you could setup an external email client to access your Gmail account and then set that email client as the default email client.

Smax, yes I think I do because so manyweb sites utilize this and I want to respond to them quickly. Now, the restof your sentence I don't completely understand:

What is that? and "to access my gmail account" and what are the steps to "set up that email client as the default email client? especially when they are asking me to choose between Outlook, Express, or Live mail. So, theres something I'm missing. Sorry

So, we will try to go slow.

First step is to decide which account to deal with...which you have essentially done...you chose the Gmail account.

Next is to choose an email client.

I don't recall if you said, but what version Windows are you using? XP or Vista? That will start us down the path towards selecting an email client.

Once you respond back with that, we will take the next step.

Yes, I have and use the various Word programs like Word and Excel. I don't use the Powerpoint though. Haven't learned how.

The key is whether or not Outlook is included with your version of Office. I believe it should be. If it is, then we can provide instructions for how to setup Outlook to work with Gmail. If you don't have Outlook, then we will have to choose a different email client.
