I have a Toshiba Satellite Lap top recently the monitor went blank. The local agent diangnosis reported to me was that the mother board is faulty. I did not believe them, so I took it back and tried another external monitor monitor. The computer works perfectly with the external monitor. Doed anyone know what may be the cause of this?

I am assuming you mean the built-in screen is blank.

If so...

It still could be the motherboard...but more in the form of the connection from the motherboard to the built-in screen.

It could be the screen is toast.

It could be the connection from the screen to the motherboard is damaged.

If an external monitor works, then i would say that the motherboard is probably OK and that the display itself is faulty. I have seen tutorials on replacing them. Not for the faint of heart in my opinion.

The motherboard itself, in general, could be OK, but there could be a problem with the connection on the motherboard for the built-in display...this would be a different connection than the external display...and it would still require replacing the motherboard.
