Speed Test: Windows 7 May Not Be Much Faster Than Vista

Your test are meaningless in the real world. I have used every OS from Microsoft since DOS 5, as well as the OS 10, Ubuntu Linux.
I have been using Windows 7 starting with Build 7000 and now RC1 7100, and there is a major improvement in performance in all areas. I am running Adobe Master Suite CS4, Office 2007 and a variety of other audio and video apps, all running faster. Boot time alone is twice as fast as Vista (SP1). My system is a stock Gateway DX-4710 with the exception of a NVIDIA 8400 GS Video Card.
I was shocked to see you test results as being so poor. I even loaded Windows 7 on a low end laptop with great results. You really need to reevaluate your so-called WorldBench.

Running windows 7 on both my desktop (phenom OC'd to 3ghz with 4gb of ram) and my laptop (duel core 2ghz with 2gb of ram) and both show significant improvements in terms of speed and memory consumption. I even get 5-20 more fps in games... I think your results are flawed.

synthetic benchmarks fail to prove anything. They have never been reliable. On top of that, the major claim MS has made, was that of disk access improvements, which they did improve. I think, for a solid review, people need to go to someplace reputable for that information. use tomshardware, or anandtech... pcworld, your articles are a joke.

I just installed W7 RC on a box I've been running XP on for a year. Bootup is indeed faster. The system SEEMS faster as I use it.
One thing is without a doubt. Either in IE8 or Firefox, downloads are lightning fast compared to before. Unless Microsoft has a secret deal with Comcast, something changed somewhere.
You guys miss one big point- W7 may become the ONLY Windows release that wasn't significantly bigger and slower than the previous Windows. Considering Microsoft's history, that is a miracle.

@waldojim: Unlike synthetic benchmarks, WorldBench is application-based. That is, we use actual applications and games to generate the benchmark score. It pertains to the previous version of the benchmark, but this page gives you an idea of how it works:

@daniel142005: To repeat the old caveat emptor: your mileage may vary.

Bootup and shutdown are both faster. The biggest increase in speed that I found is in the framerates of FSX (Microsoft Flight Simulator X). In Vista, I get about 10-14 fps with the slidders halfway. In Windows 7, I'm seeing between 25-55 fps with ALL of the slidders fully to the right (maxed out)!
AMD Phenom II 940 BE overclocked to 3.3Ghz; two Nvidia GTX 280's in SLI; 8 Gigs Ram. Windows 7 64bit

Anyone who has used Vista regulary and the Beta will say that these tests are incorrect. Not only is the application performance and stability better but the networking is over 30x faster. In Vista lagging network reads of up to 5 minutes, transfer speeds of 200kb/s if i'm lucky, and incompatibility plagued the OS. I have yet to see these problems in Windows 7. There has been one or two minor issue with power managment and no idea why some of the features are the way they are. But oh well it better!
