Every time I try to install SP1 for VISTA, It goes thru all the normal routines and after the final reboot it comes up to my desktop screen and about a minute later I get a message saying that windows has encountered a problem and needs to shut down. This happens perpetually until I enter safeboot mode and uninstall SP1. I tried turning off McAfee but that doesen't help. Anyone have any suggestions?

Are you installing it through Windows Update or manually from the Microsoft Download Center?'

Or from a disk that your ordered from Microsoft?

I admit it is less likely, but still a possibility (that is how I got SP1)...not to mention, in theory, it should nominal be similar to getting it from the Download Center.

The system notifies me that I have updates to install. I click on the "install updates" icon

That would be the Windows Update.

You might try downloading it from here:

http://www.microsoft...&displaylang=en

And take a look at this page to make sure you are fully ready:
