Have you updated your virus definitions and run a virus scan? There is a virus called MS Blast (also called Sasser, Lovsan, etc) that will cause this.If this is the problem, you can download a removal tool here.

since when did you have the problem? and did you remember installing anything before the problem started? if there problem is not on the software, maybe its in the hardware.

It could also be a heat issue. Try SpeedFan to see what internal temps you are getting.http://www.almico.com/sfdownload.php

The best way is to reinstall Windows XP Home again.

With it only being 5 minutes, there's not much you really can do in the way of diagnostic tools, and all the antiviruses in the world would not even get close to a full scan.If I were in your position, I'd take it into your local computer store, they will be able to diagnose/treat the problem better than us.And I wouldn't advise re-installing Windows, if you have anything that is important to you on your hard drive.

Heat likely.virus? hdd probs -->>test by unhooking hdd, boot from a dos floppy, a linux live cd or just let the computer run if it shuts off, it's a mechanical thing, if not it's a hdd issue, maybe virus, maybe drive. Can always get an external usb hdd cable to hook up to another machine to scan drive for virusesmost drives have diagostic software4 that can run from a floppy or cd

The best way is to reinstall Windows XP and clean the inside of your system. Take all the dust out of it by using a vacume ar compressed air.

I developed a similar problem a couple weeks age upon downloading MS "critical updates" which included WGA. Have been working with MS support every since and things are only getting worse.

There is to much unanswered questions questions here. First, are you getting any error messages before the shutdown. Like any BSOD's? I recommend that you record all the information if you get those BSOD's. Second, I would agree that it may be a heat issue. Open up the case and do some real good cleaning, ridding of dust, dirt etc...If you have fans, clean them too!!

I agree first test whether its hardware of software. Boot into a Linux live CD or ERD disc to make sure what the problem is. If its software and it gives you a countdown try typing " shutdown -a " on a cmd window. or try checking the processes that are running in Task Manager to make sure that its not a process thats making it shutdown. or check msconfig to make sure thats its not a virus that runs on start up thats making it shutdown.

This may be "too simple" an explanation but I had the same problem. Culprit was the software for my Logitech mouse - not the mouse itself but the software that came with it. I uninstalled the software and the shutdown/reboot stopped. If you are using mouse software, uninstall the software and try that. If you absolutely MUST have the software, go to their site and redownload the updated software and possibly new drivers and see if that doesn't fix your problem.
