wmp problem

Hi all,
This is the second time in a row I experianced this problem after a format.
On a different pc. Both Dell. The first is a 5150. The other a 8400. Both run xp home 32bit w/sp2.
After format, wmp9 and then upgrade to 11 fail to play movies. The movie, an original copy plays in my pc running xp home OEM, 32bit w/sp2.
The movie starts to load to menue then when you are at option to play it says it encountered an error.
I sent report and it advised going to command prompt and type regsvr32 /u nevideo.ax,
I hit enter and said it wasn't found.
This problem occurred in the 5150 before anyother burning software was installed so I am leaning to not blaming nero 6 or roxio.
Is this a codec issue, conflict, missing value in registry?
Thanks for your help,
Rommel

if it is a dvd movie, yes it is a codec issue

To my knowledge, most versions of Windows do NOT come with a native DVD player. As such, Windows Media Player cannot play DVDs by default. As many computers with DVD players come with third party DVD player software, the codec needed for a DVD are install and then Windows Media Player can play those DVDs as well.
As far as I know, the only Windows versions that come with it by default are the ones with the media center functions (i.e. XP Media Center Edition and Vista Ultimate, etc). All others you need the appropriate DVD codec added, which usually will happen when you install a third party DVD player software package.

Hey Rommel !!
If you like using Windows Media Player as I do , may I suggest
a codec pack that will enable you to play All of your files and DVDs.
You can read about it here : VistaCodecPack .
You could also install instead , the very effective DivX pack . This should be
more than enough to help in your quest to play DVds on your PC.
I have VistaCodecPack installed on both XP and Vista. The only files I can't play
with these codecs are FLV. or Flash Video which require the Flash ActiveX Control
to be installed on either XP or Vista. The latest , if you don't have it , is Adobe FlashPlayer 10 .
With these , you will be set to play any files or DVDs.

Hi Flashorn,
At the risk of sounding dumb, it wasn't easy to determine the link to the actual program.
Many options are availiable.
I clicked the link in your post, chose to download from major geeks, and to the left.
It didn't work so I am sure I messed up.
Could you please hold my hand and give a direct link?
Thank you.

Thanks for all your replies.
I tried something for the sake of curiousity. Being wmp works in my pc and I have no other dedicated dvd player.
I uninstalled nero 6 ultra from my buddies dell. Then installed nero express 6.
Now wmp will play both dvds it failed to play earlier.
I have no idea the differance between the 2 but thats all I did and its working.
I'm going to save your links that was sent.
Thanks again,
Rommel

That is probably because Nero Express has a DVD player and thus installed the necessary component for DVD playback...and those components were now available to Windows Media Player. Every computer that I have ever own that had a third party DVD player installed would also let Windows Media Player play back DVDs.

Hi smax013,
Actually the nero 6 ultra is able to play dvds. With it installed wmp still would not.
So at that time I made nero my default player. When a dvd was placed in the rom it
would bring up neros start menue. From there you would have to navigate to the movei button.
I completely uninstalled all parts of nero 6 ultra, In stalled nereo 6 express.
When I unistalled ultra, wmp defaulted to the main player.
I put in a each disc that failed to play earlier and it was fine. WMP auto ran to play button,
clicked play and happy days.
