Hype will always live because the future is never here today.

No offense, but I think this whole "cloud computing" thing is a little over-hyped. Not to say that it isn't coming, but I don't think it's coming as fast as some predict or hope.

Weird article ...
In all honesty, I think Windows is still ahead of Linux from a few perspective: usability, in general, is better. Bluetooth support, for example is ... as it should be in Windows, but skimpy, at best, in Linux.
Linux is also oberrated by too many standard: also, pulsaudio, gstreamer ... until things get a bit simpler, Windows will have an edge.
But Linux is free. As in that it costs nothing AND it does not shove down your throat an unconstitutional EULA. Linux does not need antivirus, is faster on older computer (which means saves you money) and comes with a huge set of applications and games. All free. Linux is the future and is the right choice for "average Joe". That is my opinion at least.

The current 9.04 Ubuntu's bluetooth works absolutely GREAT. Click on the little blue icon, and it picks up everything, first try. Bluez is definitely getting very mature.

There's been a literal avalanche of Linux features and support. If it isn't 'there' yet, it could get out and walk from here.

It's also faster on newer computers, too. A LOT faster. As a matter of fact over 85% of current supercomputers run Linux. The rest mostly run some other UNIX OS. Windoze? Nada.

Open source makes Linux totally adaptable. It runs on EVERYTHING.

Windoze is pretty much just Intel and intel-like architecture, now.

@Evildave

How could you forget about the gamers?

Games run well on Windows.
mmmmm .... is that the only thing Windows does well? ?:|

Windows 7 does EVERYTHING great, including Linux... :D And since Linux is free, no problemo! I'm never switching to one or the other. I'll continue to use both. I might even adopt OS X. Why not? OS are like cars. You want more than one model. At least I do... Oh I take pride in being multi-lingual as well.

Better have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

What else do you expect Linux users to do? There aren't any good games or applications to occupy them for long so the best thing to do next is to start a flame war!

Tsk-tsk! Of course there are good games on Linux! What sort of idiots (or liars) would claim otherwise?
Lots of games run directly under Linux.

Many other Windoze games run under WINE, including STEAM.
[http://appdb.winehq.org/votestats.php]
You can run WINE on the Mac, too, BTW.
You can even download whole DVDs full of games on a LIVE booting ISO.

So you don't even have to install Linux (or even an OS) to play them.

Oh, yeah, and you can totally burn out on Flash games if you wanna. All of that crap runs under Linux, too.

There are plenty of great Apps you can run on Linux. I run everything I need from variation called Xubuntu. Windows just has more. But that doesn't mean that a lot of them are any better. Some are, most aren't. The open source community is pretty awesome.

EVildave,

believe me, I've been banging my head to get a bluetooth headset to work properly with Skype for months now. I'm no Linux expert, so I'm sure that "somebody" can get it to work, but that "someone" is not me.
So I think it's fair to admit that Windows is ahead of Ubuntu 9.04 in that respect. AT least that's my own experience.

Don;'t get me wrong: I have only Ubuntu on my computers at home. I use it on an old laptop (Pentium 3), on a more recent PC (Athlon 64 3.2GHz with 4GB of Ram: I use the 64bit version there) and now even on my work laptop, as dual-boot (a core 2 duo). There's no doubt in my mind that linux is blazing faster than XP in any of these machines.

Yeah, I really want to wait months for a "possible" port to wine that might not crash if run at totally nerfed settings.
Since you like FREE software so much, how many free online games here run natively on Linux?
www.onrpg.com/
If you DO find one...it sucks!
And when a hit new (even FREE) game comes out, I really want to play it like this!

P.S. I don't consider the many Bronze and Garbage ratings on the "Top 25" Wine List you provided as "works in Linux". Do you actually know what you are talking about? Or just google some BS and paste in any link you think might support your argument? Not that I'm surprised comming from you. LOL!

The Cloud is overhyped. Until upload speeds equal download speeds, the whole "Software in the Cloud" concept is problematic.

@yankeeDDL

I am no Linux expert, but did you installed all the necessary bluetooth applications for your headset?

@bbvammy,

bluetooth actually works flawlessly, the issue is in the audio: I cannot, reliably, route the audio to my bluetooth Jabra. It worked for a sorth while, but it seemed that the chancs of pulseaudio or one of the other audio systems to conflict with each other, inncreased exponentially. I'm sure I'm doing something wrong, but I have to admit that is not nearly as easy as it is with Windows.

Hmm, "Windows 8 is not going to be a desktop OS like we know it.." What will it be, just a browser?

@yankeeDDL

my Ubuntu doesn't work with pulseaudio at all. I have to set everything on ALSA. Try it.

Wow, the article commend W7 and says little more, except for speculation, very good.
