The device itself is great! However, the upgrade policy is seriously flawed. Check out http://bit.ly/cLPFk

seriously, though, i must disagree: while addition of an accelerometer is actually quite useful, as is the additional RAM, it's not a huge jump from the previous iPhone. 3mp camera? yawn. my phone, circa 2006, has one 3.2mp camera with zoom/autofocus/macro and one 1.5mp camera for videophone. And has an accelerometer, GPS. And has a music player. Internet browser. QRcode (3D barcode) reader. Smartcard. And more. Just not the large touchscreen. And sexy Apple appeal.
So sure, nice additions, but not a major upgrade; I'll evaluate things in 6 months or whenever the next edition comes out. (hopefully that one'll do flash.)

Cool stuff invites great deals. Just saw a contest at www.trackle.com where they are giving away free iphone GS every day for the next two weeks. I want one - now that will be cool.

as for the "Chinese characters support"--well, it sounds rather nice, and i hope it does what it's intending to do. i've used the predictive text for Japanese kanji, however, and have found it rather underwhelming. predictive text works awesome in English (and, i imagine, other Roman character systems as well), but is actually quite miserable in Japanese. which made me consider: what about other ideographic-based languages? does the iphone fail in them as well?
i hate when people voice up and attempt to market things they've never tried themselves.

Yeah but this video recorder can do:
640x480 video at 30 fps, (MPEG-4) hardware encoded. Not those crappy 1.5 mp 7-15 frames per second typical of devices.

And is it waterproof and solar-rechargeable, with 1seg TV tuner, with an 8 megapixel
camera (with vibration reduction)/chasefocus, and have FeliCa? Thought not.

There´s no new hits with this iPhone.

Nokia has had excellent video recording already for years with Carl Zeiss optics. 3-megapixel camera is poor, Nokia has 8MP.

Voice control has been in Nokia for years also.

Nokia MAPS is all you need for navigating.

"Modem" connection is already ancient technology and is available with good and solid performance with Nokia.

SportsTracker from Nokia is better.

PC World need to hire new writers. A tech writer should know the difference between memory and storage. The iPhone 3GS does not have 16GB or 32GB of memory, it has 16GB or 32GB of storage. It is really frustrating when a so called tech writer know nothing about technology. Tethering is a iPhone 3.0 feature not a 3GS feature as well. So I guess that leaves 9 cool things with a typo. Best thing about the 3GS will be the battery life if Apple's claims hold up in real world usage.

I found this website that i linked to below actually found them in facebook, just click on my name to go there, dont worry, you dont need to be a facebook member. They had me up and running 3.0 GMS right away and i now have complete access to their Apple developers account with my own user ID and password. It was worth it, just my 2 cents for anyone who is in the same boat i was.

Why are some people whining about the upgrade policy? It is no different than any other new phone with any carrier.
Do you really think it was any different when Blackberry released their latest phone with Verizon? I don't know of a single carrier that will give you a subsidized price on a new phone if they already subsidized another phone for you in the last 18-24 months. This is no different. They will only subsidize the price every 18-24 months. If you haven't waited that long then you can pay full price. Geez, you guys would make poor businesspeople.

My biggest dissapointment is with AT&T. They are artificially limiting not only the capabilites of the new iPhone, but of the current 3G as well (lest anyone forget that a jailbroken iPhone is perfectly capable of recording video.)Apple screwed the pooch by extending AT&T's exclusivity.

All of this press about the new iPhone and what I want to know is what kind of upgrades are in store for the iPod Touch? I do not have an iPhone and do not plan on switching carriers just to get one. Not when I can keep my current phone and service and get the coolest parts of the iPhone, namely the iPod fuctions and app store with a touch. A friend recently got an iPhone but within weeks has decided to go back to his blackberry. The fact that our family share everything plan with sprint is wonderful for a family with multipule smart phones is another reason I'm not quick to switch to AT&T just for a phone.

As for the 10 cool things about the iPhone 3G S...
Ok it's faster. I'd still rather have the speed on a new iPod touch.

More Memory, I mean Storage. That's great for iPod users. Personally the storage seems in line with micro flash cards and even last year many of us could have added a 16GB micro flash card to our phones and whola! Next.

Video recording. My instinct has had video recording since the 1st generation. Anybody else with video? thought so.

Improved Camera. everyone with at least 3-megapixels raise your hand. Now keep them up until tomorrow when a new phone comes out with a camera thats 3-megapixels or better. And the next day, and the next day. Get the idea. Next.

You can talk to it. Not sure about anyone else but the 1st gen Instinct had this feature from the start. Simply push the speach to action button on the side and talk. Call so & so, Text so & so, run program, etc.

Built-in compass. wow. really a compass. Now if only Capt. Jack Sparrow would come and show me how to use it. Thanks Apple. Although I find it much easier to use the turn by turn gps navagation on my phone. Again, the Instinct has had this feature since day one and many sprint phones have gps navagation. The Live Search on the instinct is my number one favorite thing. no matter where I am I can simply push the action button and say "Starbucks" and a list of every starbucks in the are comes up. I can then call one map the location or get turn by turn directions to the place. When I travel this is wonderful.

Internet tethering. Pretty sure the blackberry can do this and unless you hack or crack this is not going to do you much good here in the US.

Accessibility features. Again a feature that many other phones have. Hearing aid compatable, etc.

Nike+iPod. Got nothing for this one. Although it doesn't do much good if you don't own a pair of Nikes.

New Headphones. Ok this is great. I like headphones. I'm also happy that everyone learned the headphone jack should be standard size and NOT recessed. Thanks Apple.

Still no removable battery tho huh? I'm kinda partial to the fact that I can swap my dead battery for a fresh charged one in a pinch. Not to harp again but the Instinct comes with 2 batteries and the ability to charge one while using the other.

Like I said, there is much too love about the iPhone but not much that can't be gotten by just buying an iPod touch. That's just my opinion I could be wrong.

Blimey- they have also released a Windows mobile phone.

Any day now you will able to use mp3s as a ringtone. Then you will be allowed to add your own software, change the battery for a chepaer generic. They will add a HW keyboard... and call it the iTouch Pro II.

BTW any iphone owners out there want to swap a cow for some magic beans

And nobody knows...but Apple and Apple does not talk about that until they are ready to introduce the upgrades...Apple is notorious tight lipped about future products most of the time. Anything that you hear prior to the official release is usually just rampant speculation...and maybe, just maybe someone who has access to some "leaked" information.

And that is why there is no press about an upgraded iPod Touch. There likely will not be any upgrades to the Touch until the Fall...if there are any upgrades (I would guess that maybe they will have a 64 GB version). The exception is that you can install the iPhone 3.0 software for the Touch later today...for $10.

All these mentioned still not enough to sway me away from my nokia phone. I like the big screen and the touch animations on the iphone but there are tons of things i don't like. my nokia phone can do all these things and a lot more with better camera and video and battery.

You want my two cents? How about either the MyTouch 3G or the T-mobile G1? Open source is what I want on my phone when I get one, thank you.
