USB Mouse Is Malfunctioning?

So, about a two days ago, I've been experiencing problems with my Microsoft Optical Mouse. Basically, it just quits working after a while, well, I can make it last, but I'd have to be careful not to touch the area around the usb ports. A simple bump will somehow make the mouse non functioning. For now, it's working because I haven't moved my leg in the past 10min. I've tried restarting plenty of times, and it works off the restart, and while the computer boots up, but after that it stops. There are times when I unplug it and plug it back in, it works, and then I get a little pop up saying that "This device has malfunctioned etc, etc." and it quits working. I've tried uninstalling, and reinstalling drivers, updating drivers. Uninstalling the usb roots and controllers via device manager, and restarting then. Disabling and enabling the usb ports via BIOS, but it still comes down to the same problem. Also, it seems now that my computer has been experiencing some hang shutdowns. Or it won't shut down at all, it gets to the "windows is shutting down screen" and then just stays there for a bit. This only seems to happen when I get the pop up about the malfunctioning. I don't know if this has anything to do with it, but I have gotten a message earlier in the week saying that Windows is running out of virtual memory. So I defragmented my computer lastnight, and it really needed one. 17% free space to a whomping 28% free space now. I'm getting really frustrated with my mouse and/or computer right now. I've searched all over the forums to see if anyone had the same problem, and they're very similiar but I'm thinking mine could have something to do with the USB Ports internally? I've plugged in my phone to the computer via usb, and my ipod and that seemed to work fine, I've even knocked on and around the usb ports while they were plugged in and nothing happened to them. So could it be something to do with the mouse itself?

It is very difficult to understand fully the options without knowing:
Mouse details - Wired USB or wireless with USB transmitter?
PC Details - Make and model.
Have you looked at the USB plug on the transmitter/mouse? I had one quit after it got hit and bent the USB plug.
Have you tried another mouse?
Have you tried another USB port?

Being you plugged something else into the port and it worked, even after trying to make it not work, sounds like its a mouse issue.
I am a firm believer in replacing easly replacable hardware before going into prety deep troubleshooting.
Such as what you are expriancing. As a previous poster recommended, try a different USB port.
If its the same result, borrow another USB mouse (from a friend or work) and see what happens.
A friend of mine at work had a problem with his retractable laptop mouse, turned out a wire broke in the cable causing intermitten failure.

K, well I've tried using another usb port, and it worked for a bit, and then I moved my leg and it went dead, I'm trying to use another mouse from the desktop computer, wired, usb, oh and MY mouse is wired too. And the new mouse isn't working either, I was tempted to buy another mouse, but I'm pretty sure since I just got the mouse that I'm having issues with, it shouldn't be the mouse that's causing the problem. My laptop is a Dell 1501. Idk what else you guys wanted to know about the computer. Im guessing it's just my usb ports acting up?

It could the fact that there is movement of the USB plug in the port. Most laptops have the ports on the back and the plug sticks out so it is easy to accidently flex it somewhat. I had an MS wireless mouse whose transmitter stuck out about an inch. If I allowed it to touch the arm, it would lose connection and I would have to reconnect it. (There is a small connection button on wireless mice to re-sync the mouse and the transmitter).
I solved my problem by shifting to a Logitech Nano mouse. It is a small notebook mouse about the size of all other wireless notebook mouses, but what makes it so unusual is the transmitter only stick out about 1/4". I no longer remove the transmitter when I put it in it's case, and it does not stick out far enough to get hit by legs, chair arms, etc.
Here is the Newegg link. Mine is the VX as it has the flywheel scroll wheel which I love. Of course if your laptop has bluetooth, you can get a bluetooth drive and don't have to mess with a plug in transmitter either.

Well, I'd like to know why it works during the bootup, and sometimes it even HALTS bootup. The mouse being plugged in when I try to shut down my computer is the reason why it won't shut down at all. I'm not really grasping the concept of why it's doing that. And if the mouse is plugged in, when I try to power on my pc, it won't work. I don't get what's going on because the mouse has worked for a couple months now and suddenly it's just dead. I'm afraid of buying those other mouses and just having it do the samething all over again. But other than that, if I plug it in DURING bootup, it works. so ehh??

I don't know. There can be many reasons from a bad mouse cord, a bad USB plug on the mouse, a bad socket on the machine, malware on the machine, etc. If you have the machine sitting on a table with no pressure on the USB plug/socket, does it react the same? Does it react the same with another mouse plugged in? (While sitting on the table).

Thankyou for all the replies guys, Yes it was the mouse that was causing my laptop to malfunction and not to shut down. I tried using that mouse on my desktop and it quit working after a bit, and the computer wouldn't shut down. I went out and bought a 50 dollar mouse today, a micro usb mouse, and it works like a charm, I'm hoping that it won't malfunction one day.
