I have just purchased a new Canon MX860. I have a dedicated fax line in a separate office and oly want to use MX860 to send faxed. Anyone any ideas how I can get it to work without the phone being connected to the printer. Suggestions please.

1 for printer itself and 1 for network (wireless set-up)

Not sure that I understand what you are after...

What do you mean by "how I can get it to work without the phone being connected to the printer"? Do you mean how can you get it to work without phoneline being connected to the printer? If so, then you cannot...a fax machine needs a phone line to work. The one possible exception would be to use the scanner to scan in the document you want fax into some electronic document form and then use an online based fax service like eFax.com to send the document as a fax.

Oh, I have also moved your thread to the Printers forum as it is likely a better forum for you to get an answer to your question.

My phone and printer are connected through an adaptor. so when the phone rings the printer does not know the phone has been answered and so leaps into action. My previous multi function printer was aHP and on that I was able to set it to send but not receive faxes as I had a separate line for taht in anothe office. The canon will apparently work if the phone comes via the printer.

Ah....now I understand...

Is there some sort of "auto answer" button on the face of the unit? My HP all-in-on has an "auto answer" button...it is lit up since I have a dedicated fax line.

I found some pictures of the buttons and it appears that Canon does not have a button like HP does.

Thus, it appears you need to change the settings using the on-screen menu on the printer. Supposedly (according to the manual that I downloaded), you can switch it to a "TEL priorty mode". From the manual...see if that helps:

Thank you folks,

I have already tried those methods. It seems Canon have made no allowance for people who just want to send faxes. To make this "Beast" work it seems I must have my phone working through the printer, so when the phone rings I would pick it up and that action would tell the printer to "stay asleep". If I can't find a way around this other than unplugging the cord I may have to dump it in the nearest river and go back to HP.

That might be...but I would also go through the various on-screen options on the printer. There might be an option to turn off the auto answer function (just because I did not find it in my brieft scan through the manual does not mean it is not there...I would likely have a better shot of finding it if I could "lay hands" on the printer).

And there is always the "brute" force method...leave the device off except when sending faxes or printing pages or scanning documents. And I am half joking as that is a REALLY sucky option.
