Close a Word 2007 Document without Closing Word

Rick,
Can't you just click the Office Button and select CLOSE...Or am I misunderstanding the problem?

Im having a hard time finding the CTRL key, then the W key at the same time. Its easy for me to click the Office button then press "C"
Pressing ctrl+W requires TWO clicks (press) too.

Well versed in the benefits of Ctrl+W (and Ctrl-C, Ctrl-V, Ctrl-X, Ctrl-Z, etc).

Of course, that is likely due to my misspent youth using Macs (although it is Cmd instead of Ctrl)!

This doesn't work for me (the options part of it). Mine is already checked for showing all windows in the taskbar and my documents don't have their own Xs. I added the "close document" icon to quick access toolbar as a workaround but it bugs me that Word 2007 doesn't work the same way as Excel 2007.

Look again: You need to clear the checkbox for that item. :)

My work around is to add a Close icon to the Quick Access Toolbar.

Click on Office Button - Click on Word Options - Click on Customize - Chose commands from "All Commands- Select Close and Add it to the Quick Access Toolbar.

Then to close an open window, just click on the Close icon on the Quick Access Toolbar.

I have my Office 2007 Quick Access Tool Bars for Word, Excel, and PowerPoint configured mostly the same wat. And I have the Close Icon (that looks like a file folder) on the right end of the Quick Access Tool Bar for these programs.

I like being able to just click on that Close icon, on the right end of the Quick Access Tool Bars, when I want to close the open document window.

It doesn't work for me either. I see separate docs in the taskbar, but in each window I only see the little blue question mark for the help button.
What version of Word are you using, because the instructions to reach the option are different in mine too. Office Button / Word Options button / Advanced option / scroll down to Display Section. Is the only difference in the way you wrote the instructions or how your app looks.
PS: I prefer to stick with the old standard to close individual docs, who needs to fiddle around with a mouse trying to hit a tiny x button.

I am using Vista Ultimate with SP-2, and Office 2007 Ultimate with SP-2.

I have tried several other ways to close an open Office Word 2007 document. And I prefer having a Close icon on the right end of the Quick Access Tool Bar and using it to close and open document.

Note to check Word 2007 Version

Click the Microsoft Office Button, and then click Word Options.
Click Resources, and then click About.
To see information about your computer, click System Info.

Why don't millions of people deluge those morons in Seattle with complaints instead of trying to figure out arcance workarounds? Everytime they bring out a new program so they can sell it to gullible folks, they make it more complicated and hence less useful to those of us who aren't computer geniuses.

Is anyone happy about having to go to the little globe in the upper left corner to get to other documents or the print function for example? Was there a problem with having those useful-- and often used-- functions right out in plain sight on the toolbars?

I've migrated to Open Office. At least their quirks won't cost me an arm and a leg.

I for one did not like having both close document and close Word right next to each other. It is very easy to place the close document icon on the quick access bar. Simply open the office button, right click on the close icon, and click on "Add to quick access toolbar". The icon is always one click away (just click Word 2003), and the close document is not next to close Word where you may hit the wrong one. Use the same procedure for the other office 2007 products.

I think that wildbill2u has it right. How could the developers of Word make a mess like this? I use the solution of putting a close doc icon in the Quick Access Bar but- has anyone noticed that the icons for this action and for "Close All Documents" are identical!! On the same line - the icon for "Go to beginning of doc" is the same as in Word 2003 while the icon for "Go to end of doc" is a - wait for it! a green button, and, this icon is used for other actions that are completely different. Talk about the right hand not knowing what the left hand is doing!!

That sounds great RAGarrison, but would you mind telling me where the "all commands" are please? I couldn't find it in the " word options"
