Evening partygoers,
I have a problem with my windows xp. When I go to taksbar/ start/ search my computer will not perform the search. Also the taskbar freezes as well and the computer slows down. Shortcuts on my desktop still work. I have ran AVG and Malware bytes programs. All come up negative. I feel that some virus/malware will not let me perform the "search" off the taskbar.*+
Please help. So far all I have been told is the re-install windows and we all know that is not fun,,,thanks in advance for any help.

Hey autigerfan !!
Welcome to PCWorld Community !
If you can , try accessing Safe Mode by re-booting and pressing the
F8 key upon re-start . (press F8 multiple times). Now, again if you can ,
(always in safe mode)
try to access System Restore and restore to a earlier time when this
problem didn't exist. To access System Restore , follow these instructions :
Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore.
Also, can you download security programs or are you blocked from those
sites. Try to access these sites and install these scanners : in Normal Mode
SUPERAntiSpyware . use the free version
Dr.WebCureIt . This is a .exe and does not require to be installed.
If you can download , install and update SUPERAntisSpyware in Normal Mode then, when in Safe Mode
run a Quick Scan.
Dr.WebCureIt doen not require to be updated as the version you are downloading is the current one.
Simply double click on the .exe and run a quick scan . Normal and Safe Mode.
So, try to download these programs and then, when in Safe Mode try the scans and Syystem Restore
to see if it has any effect .

Hi and welcome to the forum. In addtition to what Flashorn has said, I would recommend going to Add / Remove programs in the control panel and get rid of it. I am resonably certain that what you are talking about is the upgrade to Windows Explorer. I have dumped it twice ( The second time was a mistake in installing it). It is no where as good as Windows Explorer for searching your files. coastie

evening partygoers,
for those of you who have offered advice on how to try to fix my problem "thank You". my problem still exists. I did go back to change the settings to a date where I did not have the issue with the "search" aspect on my computer. I did do the 2 programs that were recommended. I also uninstalled windows service pack 3 as well.
should I go back and uninstall programs to see if there is a program that is the cause of all of this? also when I click "search" off of my taskbar I can hear my C drive run for about 2-3 seconds and then it stops.
any ideas and thoughts are appreciated.,,, thank you.

OK. I did not see any mention of having gone to Control Panel > Add remove programs and removing Windows Search ( at least that is what I think it was called ). When you do that, you will revert back to Windows Explorer, and then you can search your files. That is what I recommended in my above post and you apparantly din't follow it. coastie

i went and looked for the "windows search" on the add/remove list but did not see it. would it help you if i were to give you the list of programs on my pc and or my process' as well. i am dedicated to the cause of getting this figured out with out have to re-install windows.
so, i have ran the virus programs that have been suggested, looked for things in the add/remove that have been suggested. be patient with me please.

Ok. I'm not sure that is the exact name of that. If it is what I am thinking about, you have a white rectangular Icon with SEARCH on it on the task bar. I went back to Windows Update to see if i could get the name of that thing, but remembered I said I didn't want to see it again. Also, if it is the one I'm thinking of, If you click START > ALL PROGRAMS > ACCESSORIES you will not see Windows Explorer listed as it took the place of that. If this is the case then you will need to uninstall it in order to get Windows Explorer back. I am reasonably sure it is Windows Something, just don't remember exactly what. coastie

Hey coastie !!
Have allot of heart lately ? OK, I just wanted to know how things are working out.
I found a link that just Might be what you guys are looking for. BTW, the name of
that stupid update is Windows Desktop Search 4.0 . this thing is Constantly
Indexing every file on your PC.
Here is the link I found that Apparently take care of this problem :
http://www.davidarno...-...-revisited/ .
Scroll down a bit to see the Desktop Search 4.0 uninstall.
You Might also be able to use Revo to uninstall this. (maybe not but, worth a try)
Install Revo and in the applications (programs) screen , it Might be listed . From
there you could uninstall. http://www.revouninstaller.com/ .
If you don't want to see this White Box on your Task Bar, just right click on it and from
the ensuing menu , Uncheck the tool bar. it will not stop the service from Indexing but,
at least you won't see it.

Hey Flash, Thanks for providing the name of that thing as I couldn't remember it ( Windows Desktop Search).
As for the Heart, I had a follow up with the Cardiologist Monday afternoon. I have been out cutting grass with no ill effects. They ran an EKG. My Blood Pressure was good, 136 / 74 and when the Dr. looked at the EKG strip, ghe broke out in a smile and said, "look at this, it doesn't even look like you have had a Heart Attack". My cholesterol has been good for about a year or so..........finally. I am pretty much back up to speed again.
