I was particularly interested in the way it showed multiple pictures on the screen at a time in seemingly random motion, flipping them and such.

Are you thinking of the default screen saver?

I might have to remember to fire up the Apple TV and see if I can see what you mean.

My son, the computer engineer, says it is similar to the frontrow application.

Do you have a Mac?

I do not believe the FrontRow can do it. It is had rather limited slideshow settings.

iPhoto, however, does seem to have similar transition settings to the AppleTV slideshow settings.

In addition, Powerpoint (and I would assume Keynote) has quite a few different types of transitions.
