For two days I had my Vista Laptop performing a full system back up to DVD 16 discs later I accidentally terminated the operation before it was complete, almost but not quite. Has all my effort been a waste ? If I try to back up again will it pick up where I left off or will it be another two days of wasted time and energy?

I honestly do not know for sure if it will pickup where it left off or not. It might.
I do believe that based upon how Vista's backup program stores the backup files, it is not a complete waste...most of your data should be backed up and retrievable by more "normal" means (i.e. through Windows Explorer) even if you cannot retrieve through the backup progra....I am pretty sure the Vista backup program uses standard compressed files for the backup files.
