Hello.

I'm puzzled by a problem with IE8 (I think). I built a 6 page website with Microsoft Publisher and uploaded it to my domain. All was well as far as viewing it ... it looked just like it did in the Publisher file on my computer.

After a month or so, I changed the site. I edited the site with publisher ( did a 'save as' on my computer and saved a copy of the Publisher file, then edited it by deleting one of the pages and then editing another. Looked good, so I published that file to my website and when it said 'file already exists' I overwrote the file with the new file. Here's where I get lost...

The new published website doesn't work like a website for several reasons... when viewed using IE8, all I can get is the first page. And, that is even different because in the place where the five page names are listed with a direct link to each page, all I can see is 5 lines with no writing and nowhere to click to go to each particular page. Also, across the bottom of the page where the other direct links are supposed to be with the titles of each page, they are not showing any wording at all, let alone any blue type that you can click on and go to that page.

I'm using One&One to host my website, so I called tech support and had someone try to figure out what's going on. Here's what we found?....

1) He could view the website correctly because he read to me and described to me the way he saw it, and it sounded a lot like the 'Publisher' version of the site that I have on my computer. He was using Firefox.

2) When I tried viewing the site using Compuserve, it worked fine.

3) He had me clear all of the caches on my computer but no help.

4) Here's something else that doesn't fit... When I try going to the website from another computer that I own, it will not view correctly...same problem as above, and also using IE8

Thanks for any input that you may have.

Have YOU tried downloading Firefox and see if it will view your webpage correctly?

No, haven't done that yet, although I was wanting to figure out why IE won't load the site correctly first...haven't looked at Firefox to put it on my computer... are you recommending that as my browser over IE?

I am recommending that you use Firefox temporarily to see if it will view the page properly. If it does not, then something more general is happening to your computer. If it does view it fine, then your IE install is likely somehow screwed up, unless IE 8 does not like your webpage.

Whether you choose to use IE or Firefox down the road is strictly something for you to decide...right now, Firefox is merely a "diagnostic" tool to try to help determine if it is just an IE thing or a more general computer thing.

Windy,

I'm having the same exact problem. The problem is that IE 8 is not reading the scripts that are written with Publisher. (My version is 2007) IE 7 will read them, Firefox and Netscape read them fairly well. The shame of it is that Microsoft is pushing for us to upgrade to IE 8 and it can't read what we are publishing with their software! Why would we want to spend the money on their software and the time to build a website if all the IE 8 users can't read it?

I think there should be a factory recall. I'm more than a little upset.

Try opening the webpage in IE8 using the compatibility view. There is a small button in IE8 which switches to compatibility mode. See if it works fine with that webpage.

It should work fine with compatibility view as it emulates IE7.

Also there is a known problem with publisher 2003,07 and IE8 compatibility. Msft has a support article on this. This should help. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/969705 But before doing this just check if it works fine with compatibilty view.

Smax,

I downloaded Firefox 3.5 and it worked correctly viewing my website. Also tried using the compatibility view with IE8 and my website but no joy. I guess that narrows it down to IE8. Since I upgraded to IE8 no only do I have this problem but also my Dell Inspiron 6000 won't connect wirelessly to the internet...have to plug it in to the modem via network cable... this was kind of a rough upgrade...not one of the smoother I think...

Thanks

You might try removing IE8...

Piyushsingh,

Thanks very much for your response to my problem. First I tried using compatibility view as you suggested, but no joy viewing my website. Then I read the Microsoft article that you referenced. It told about why IE8 was viewing my site created in Publisher incorrectly and suggested ungrouping the items on the webpage and republishing it. In my Publisher file, I selected the first page (index page) and 'selected all items' on the page and then 'ungrouped items' and did that for all five pages and then republished it on my site... it worked! Now IE8 views my site exactly as Firefox does, which looks exactly the same as my Publisher file. It also shows the quick links for all five pages as well as the list of pages and links to go to each page which is at the bottom of each page and they all work the way they are supposed to.

Thank you very much...you definitely saved me a lot of work (and grief!)...

Here's the problem, if you buld a website and want other's to view your website for a business let's say, people with IE8 may not be able to view portions of your site. For example, I built my websites with Publisher 2003, and cannot view any links to my other pages, I can only view the home page, the buttons to my other pages do not appear. This is only on IE8, Firefox and Opera have no problems. I had to upgrade my Publisher to 2007 and update that software to service pack 1, now everything looks as it should.
