I came across this article while waiting on hold with AT&T customer support. My problem sounds very similar to what this article says. After working fine, my iPhone 3GS suddenly stopped giving me any indication that someone left a phone mail. I only discovered this was happening after someone asked if I got their voicemail.

Level 2 tech support said they can’t solve this. They are filing a case for “the engineers.” She said an engineer will notify me by text or by call when the issue is resolved.

I've had this problem on my 1st gen iPhone for more than a month now. (I can point to a page where I mentioned it on May 30, if necessary.) Specifically, 2 voicemails were delayed over 12 hours. I don't get or make a lot of calls, but these were important work-related calls, and it was very annoying after the fact that I didn't even know I had messages waiting.

I've had this issue intermittently from the day the iPhone 2G came out, which continues with until today with my 3G. It's sadly "normal" for AT&T.

I also "had" this problem. I have since used a free service to circumvent the ATT voice mail problem. I have been pleased with the service and now I know I get all of my voicemail on a timely basis. I am alerted by both message and email that a voicemail is waiting.
I do not work for this company. If ound it tru a Google search. it is www.youmail.com. Perhaps ATT should buy them.

I also had this problem several months ago. It seem to me that the missing vmails would show after I would either get a new call or a new message would come in.

This is not just an iPhone problem. My wife and I have experienced voicemail delays of hours at various times with AT&T with just ordinary voicemail messages being delayed.

I had my 3G replaced under AppleCare and since then I have some major issues like others here. My iPhone seems to hibernate from AT&T after a period of time of inactivity. Upgraded to 3.0 no diff. I get missed call notifications while my phone is on and in net coverage. Voicemail notifications don't come unless I restart my phone and then they come rolling in. So my phone seems to not ring, missed notifications of vmail and time stamp on missed calls way later than actual time, vmail stamp when it finally comes, is actual call time and always earlier than missed call time. Returning it to Apple tomorrow.

Just returned from the Apple store. My 3G iphone was replaced by them
under warranty and it works just fine now. Voicemail comes right away
and the phone rings when it should. Read my posts above to see that my
problem is not exactly like all others here with just delayed voicemail.

I had this problem for the first time last week on my first gen iPhone. It took two days for a message to show up.

I've had this problem with my iphone 3G for a while now.
I replaced my original iphone when it stopped receiving calls. I called AT&T for months about it and they said they had no problems on their end. So I bought an iphone 3G. Still couldnt receive calls. I call AT&T. "Yeah we've had a couple of towers down for a while."
They refused to let me return my new purchase. I told them that day that I would be leaving when Verizon or anyone else got the iphone and I am still holding to that commitment.

I upgraded to the 3GS and gave my 3G to my wife and the problem travelled with the phone. It seems to be phone related, not account or AT&T related. I am off to the Apple store this AM. I will post my results. Keep in mind my 3G is still under warranty.

I started having this problem with my iPhone 3G a few weeks ago and spent hours on the phone with tech support, to no avail. Voice mails have been delayed 15 hours or more in my case. Support was not aware of the problem and put me through the typical, reset, power down, remove SIM, re-boot, etc.
I first noticed the problem after I upgraded to the 3.0 OS.
I expect more from Apple and AT&T.

I have had this issue for YEARS (Since iPhone 1.0). Mysteriously, voicemail would appear that was weeks old, or I would have people tell me that they left voicemail and I never responded. I would check and still find my voicemail was empty; only to have it arrive days or even weeks later. Some voicemail went into limbo and never arrived; I tended to discount those messages as being sent to a wrong number but maybe that wasn’t the case. Contacting AT&T only created frustration for me so it became a utility that I discounted. Since AT&T is the only service I can have for my iPhone I stuck with it. Several people that I work with say that’s the only reason why they DON’T have an iPhone (AT&T bound). It has seemed to work better in the last 9 months or so.

...I need to add that my parents seem to have the opposite problem with AT&T with phantom voicemail. They cannot stop the signal that notifies them that they have voicemail waiting and when they check, their voicemail box is empty. They have reset their phones many times to get rid of the flashing notification light and the problem periodically re-manifests itself. This is on a regular landline phone connected to AT&T. They have even changed phones several times thinking that it may be a hardware problem. Perhaps AT&T needs to take a hard look at their entire voicemail system and how it works.

(My 2nd reply) I just DID get a voicemail right after it was sent, a small miracle considering my recent track record with AT&T, but it made me exceedingly angry in regard to my primary complaint about their phone service: inability to get decent reception almost anywhere. Not in my apartment, in my lab, or in most of the medical school where I work. (Plenty of other people walk around the med school talking on cell phones, so it's not ALL cell phone services.) Just now I called my brother (walking outside where I had a couple of bars, wow), who is traveling toward me but some hours away, to try to make arrangements to meet. He needed to call back. I stood and waited 15 minutes outside, but no call. Finally I looked at the phone icon and saw I had a voicemail. His message started, "I guess I waited too long to call back." I am SO frustrated with AT&T. I love my iPhone for EVERYTHING except the phone service. At this point I just about despise AT&T, and wish I had a CHOICE. I don't see any excuse for service this lousy. I'm just grateful that I did get the voicemail without having to wait until tomorrow for it.

I've had this problem for at least a month now.
I varies day to day but mostly it happens when someone leaves me a Voicemail while I have very low or no signal.
I have received messages sometimes days after subsquent messages were received and listened to.
This is just another chink in AT&T's already weak armor and proving more and more that Apple needs to do a deal with Verizon to make AT&T wake up and smell the roses.
As far as I'm concerned, until AT&T admit to these issues and fix them they're just another third rate company and deserve to start loosing customers.
Vote with your wallets people.
