Since your "problem(s)" seem to have started with AVG ( which I do NOT recommend for
antiVIRUS protection ), I recommend you seek help on THEIR Support Forums at
forums.avg.com/ . I will note that Ad-Aware SE Personal is obsolete and should be
uninstalled ( I do NOT recommend getting their latest version ) and most likely the use of
registry programs like Systerac XP Tools and Smart PC has been a negative and NOT the
positive they claim to be . IF possible, I recommend you "reverse" what these 2 have done .
P.S. When posting on Forums, it is highly recommended to give the SPECIFIC Name of
your Operating System and the Brower(s) you use, plus possibly the Manufacture of your
computer and its Model Info .

If that does not work, then you could try uninstalling AVG and installing something like Avast instead and see if that helps.

Welcome to PCWorld Community !
Please read all of my post before attempting any install.
As was mentioned, you can uninstall AVG but, before you do, Download these tools from the net
and then , Disconnect from the internet and do the work .
First : Download either Avira or Avast antivirus applications. Both are free and are the best at protecting
your interests. Both have a Paid For program but, you'll only need the Free version for Home Use.
Second : If you are to uninstall AVG, go to the Add / Remove program in XP and uninstall from there first.
Then download the Uninstall tool from AVG to complete the uninstall. You can download this tool from
this link : http://www.avg.com/download-tools
To clean up the Temps Files left by the uninstall , download and run ATF Cleaner. It is an .exe so, you
don't need to install. http://www.atribune....id=25&Itemid=25 .
Now , Disconnect from the Net and Re-Boot your PC.
Avira : read from this link : http://www.free-av.d...roducts/1/aviraantivirpersonalfree_antivirus.html .
Avira : Download from this link. : http://www.free-av.d...roducts/1/aviraantivirpersonalfree_antivirus.html .
Download English installation kit
Avira AntiVir Personal - FREE Antivirus, Version 9
Date: 2009-06-08, Version: 9.0.0.403 30.8 MB
The other one we recommend is Avast . It might be better in your case as it is a bit easier to manage but, the interface is awful looking. It's your choice.
You can read about and download from this link :
http://www.avast.com/eng/avast4home.html
If you have any questions on How Too, post back and ask before you do any work. We will be happy to help.
Remember , Only One antivirus , One antispyware in real time and only One Firewall.

Please read ALL of my post before doing any work.
OK, try the onboard file cleanup utility.
Go to Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup.
Click on Disk Cleanup and let it run. It might take a while so, be patient.
Once the Disk Cleanup is done, download and run this Defragmenter.
JKDefrag > http://www.kessels.com/JkDefrag/ . It is an .exe so , no install
is needed.
OR
You can download directly from this link :
|JkDefrag-3.36.zip|Download for Windows 2000/2003/XP/Vista/2008|479kb|
Just Unzip the file( to the Desktop. Easier to access) and double click on the JKDefrag.exe .
It will start immediately . It is
not very pretty to look at but, it will do the job. This might take a while also so, let
it finish. This is what it will look like once unzipped : You will only need the JKDefrag.exe,
(the Top one) the other files can be deleted safely.
IF you can't run any of these programs then , Start Up in "Safe Mode" and access
those programs from there and run them. Here is how to get to "Safe Mode"
Safe Mode Tutorial : http://www.pcstats.c...id=1643&page=2.
Read the first Two paragraphs , the others are just more info.
How do I get into safe mode?
Why should you remember all this?
You didn't say which Antivirus you have chosen to install but, once in Safe Mode and the
Work is finished, you should run that Antivirus BEFORE leaving Safe Mode just to be
certain that there are no infected files. When the scan is done PLZ post the Log File
from that scan in your next post.
IF there is a program that will not start in Safe Mode, try the others and post back with
as much info. as possible.

I'm glad to hear that you are back to normal.
You should keep using JKDefrag for the defragging of your PC. It
is better than the one in XP. To keep your PC running smoothly ,
you should schedule a defrag, a cleaning of temps files and a scan
of your PC once a week.
Now, you will need a Antispyware in Real Time Mode. This will help
Avast keep your PC clean of any nasties that try to infect your PC.
Unfortunately , I don't know of any GOOD Antispyware that are free
with Real Time scanning. I will recommend that you buy a subsciption
for MalwareBytes' AntiMalware. http://www.malwarebytes.org/mbam.php .
The price is $24.95 for a Lifetime of use. You only buy Once.
The other matter I would suggest you take a look at , is the Firewall, which
is a very important part of your security. In this category , we have two that
we recommend. Both are Free and work well in XP and Vista.
The easiest to install and configure is "PC Tools Firewall Plus".
http://www.pctools.com/firewall/ .
The second we recommend is "Online Armor" .
http://www.tallemu.c...n-software.html .
There is a Paid For version but, the Free version is all you'll need.
REMEMBER , only One antivirus , One antispyware in Real Time mode
and only One Firewall.
IF you have XP's firewall activated, De-Activate it BEFORE you install any
other Firewall.
If you have Any other questions , we will be happy to help.

I DO NOT use Ad-Aware anymore because it stopped working on me and I found better tools to use. I use Malwarebytes.org (excellent tool), Spybot Search & Destroy (also excellent), and Super Anti-Spyware. Malwarebytes.org and Spybot S & D are installed on my computer. Super Anti-Spyware is on a disc and I load it from the disc. That's usually the best thing to do according to the IT person at my work.
My guess is that the programs you have (or had) were causing conflicts. Another reason I do not use Ad-Aware is that it WILL conflict with Spybot S &D (at least that was my experience).
And YES, you only want ONE firewall and ONE anti-virus program on your PC. I use Webroot Anti-Virus with Anti-Spyware.
Some other thoughts: You can and should have the Windows Firewall (whatever your OS is) ON when you are online, in addition to your installed firewall. I use Webroot Desktop Firewall, which I have found is very good. The Windows Firewall, however, is crap because it is not a two-way firewall and thus provides inadequate protection and is of poor functionality. Also, note that in addition to the tools you have installed on your PC, you can run the Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool if your PC becomes infected (or you suspect that it is). The only caveat is that the tool WILL NOT remove spyware or adware, only Trojans and things like Conficker. Another tool is the Windows Live OneCare Safety Scanner, which also checks the registry for problems and your Internet connection's security as well as defragmenting your hard disk.
For anti-virus protection, I have used Norton (hated it), McAfee (okay), Windows Live OneCare (the Safety Scanner is great but the hollistic program sucks big time), and now Webroot (which I swear by).
Hope this helps!

Welcome to PCWorld Community !
What we are taliking about here is a Layered Approach to security.
You don't need to have allot of programs to secure your PC but, only
GOOD ones. The one's I have recommended are ALL up to date and
best of class in their respected fields .
I use those programs on a daily basis (not all at the same time). The
point of having a Layered Approach is to minimize the risk of conflicts
and to have the smallest foot print . In that respect, you only have to look
at Task manager to verify that you are indeed getting what you paid for.
(in most cases , it's Free). Also , you don't want to slow down the daily
operation of your PC. These are all facts that have been discussed at
length on these forums and other reputable security forums around the
net. For more information , you might want to take a look at these ratings
from independent researchers:
AV Comparatives for your Antivirus .
Matousec Firewall Challenge .
Please scroll down to the Challenge part of the report and look at Webroot's firewall scores.
As for S&D, it has fallen by the way side and is no longer recommended by any security expert.
Microsoft offers a Online Safety Scanner BUT, for XP only. NO Vista usage except for malware
removal.
Windows Live OneCare safety scanner .
It will accept Firefox with certain conditions but, you'd be better off using IE7 or 8.
As you Might know, Windows Live OneCare will be no more very soon. The new service to take
it's place will be the Free Morro or Microsoft Security Essentials which is now in Beta.
