I have an iPhone 3G and
it did this very thing last week. It was my fault. My phone was in the
sun for about an hour or more and when I picked it up it had this
message on the screen. It took about 10 mins in the shade for it to
cool off. I live in Texas and it was over 100 degrees in the sun. I
have also had a few friends tell me this has happened to them as well.
I wasn't even using the phone at the time when it overheated. So YES,
it does happen and not just with the 3GS version.

yeah. i'm sure it's just a big conspiracy. trust an apple lover to to share that opinion. they bought them just to slander the company. how selfless they are in their propaganda. if it were true, it would probably be a little deserved. apple isolates itself intentionally and the result of backlash is obvious. maybe the phones actually do get a little hot as sacreligious as that may be for you to admit.

Thank you so much JakeB. How truly thoughtful of you to take so much time out of your busy schedule to call out my insightful posting on the illustrious PC Magazine forums with an equally insightful posting yourself. ALLOW ME TO THANK YOU FOR ENRICHING THIS ALREADY DEEPLY ENGAGING SERIES OF FORUM POSTS!!!!!!!!!!!!! (I threw in the caps and exclamation points just for you, since from your posting, I assumed you are a fan) Your praise is much appreciated. And I know your posting must be sincere, since what kind of person would use sarcasm to attack another individual personally on a forum about computer related articles.

The fact that none of these alleged overheating iPhone users have posted a picture of that screen shown above tells me there's not really an overheating issue. It's just people feeling the phone get mildly warm, overreacting, or intentionally trying to cause a scandal. Leaving your phone (no matter the brand) in a 113ยบ car is obviously a bad idea, and is no indication of a failure on the part of the hardware.
I have not left my phone in my car. I have not left it in the sun. I use it daily, as I work from home in my house. It gets extreamly hot. I have to use speaker to keep it away from my face and ear. I have turned one phone in already to Apple. They replaced it, and this replacement gets hot as well.
I am telling my company I want to return this phone, and I do not want another Iphone.

When I owned an iPhone, playing a game would cause the phone to get incredibly hot. I can totally understand the phone crashing, causing the CPU to excessively heat and explode since the phone is completely sealed. It's basically a fire cracker waiting for a situation to set it off. Why doesn't Apple just design a phone where the back clips off and the battery can be removed, etc. Stop blaming your customers because you care so little about them and more about how your stupid phone looks.
