I think Google would gain more traction if they would say that they are going to release a Google polished Linux distribution. Then we could finally have a credible third competitior in the OS business. Until people get their apps (and I mean WoW, itunes etc...) then Google is wasting it's time. Perhaps they are laying the groundwork for the day when everyone has 1Gbs (up/down) broadband. Until then you have to deal with all that HD video coming from today's camcorders.
A polished linux distro could finally give people a reason to consider it. The challenge is that ms/win 32/.net has a 15yr head start on app development.

Chrome OS will do to computers what Android did for cell phones - absolutely nothing.
@ rblokolud1- Linux, and to a greater degree, Unix, have been around for a VERY long time. HP has offered a "polished" linux OS for a few years. Just because it has a google brand on it doesn't mean it'll be any better.

I agree completely. I just noted that I thought they would get more
traction with that path. I can imagine a world where there are three
refined OS choices on the market.
I think one thing that Google
could bring to Linux that it has been lacking is clout. People would
take a Google branded linux distro much more seriously. They could
take it down to the kernel, and build it up from scratch and deliver a
great experience. There are enough applications out there now for
Linux that they could bring together to make it viable. All they would
need to get it off and running is support from some one or two major
application developers.
BSD is a fringe OS, but guess what,
Apple took it, and polished it, and gave it a new name (OSX) and now it
is the only real competitor to Windows.
I'm a windows user,
I think linux right now is a great server os and I'm not saying it is a
slam dunk. But it seems to me to be a more viable path to start with a
traditional computing experience and get people onboard and then evolve
your OS into this cloud centric paradigm. The cloud may be the future,
but there are a lot of factors outside of Google's control that need to
be resolved before it can handle the computing tasks people are
currently doing today (HD video)
