Buy Games or Rent Them?

I have a friend who buys everything brand new, even if he only has a passing interest in it. Needless to say, he's often disappointed and subsequently has a mountain of games he's played a couple of times and never again gathering dust in his living room. In addition to looking like $hit it's also a monument to poor spending habits and, surprise surprise, he is often short on cash.
I have been hounding him to start renting. I've even offered to invest the 5 minutes online to get him set up with a gamefly account. For $15- $20 a month he could still play everything he wants to and save what I am sure would add up to thousands a year. He could most likely get several months for free on trade-ins alone. At the very least he could play games before he buys them and make smarter decisions.
Is it just me or is this what most people are doing? Are you hooked on owning everything or do you use gamefly and/or netflix?

If you are a "hardcore" gamer and like to play/try a bunch of different games, then I would think that renting would be a good way to go to try games out. If you find you like a particular game, then you buy it so that you can fully play it. Of course, with the likes of GameFly, since there is no time limit on rentals, you could play the game as long as you like. The only way GameFly might not work would be if you like to actively play more than 4 games at one time.

I rent from gamefly and I'm a pretty modest gamer in comparison. I maybe buy 1 or 2 games a year but I play a lot more without a huge investment going the rental route. I just do the 1 at a time plan but my overall investment to do it is pretty small and what I do end up buying is played beforehand so I know without a doubt it's worth owning.

I thought of renting too; however, I feel that $15 a month is too high, and I may only play games a couple hours a week, so within six months my renting spending limit will have surpassed the amount of a games single cost.
It all depends on how much gaming you do and how many different games you like to play. If you do a lot of gaming and like to play a lot of different games (as opposed to playing one or two games a lot), then doing a GameFly monthly subscription might be just the thing.
For me, it is just not worth it. I do not game that much. And I basically only play two or three games at any one period of time. Thus, it makes more sense for me to just buy the game rather than pay a monthly fee.

I'm not a huge gamer but I do have an interest in it and I use the 1 at a time plan with gamefly and am completely happy with that. I know some people go all the way up to something like 4 games at at time with them. You'd have to have an awful lot of time on your hands for that one but I can see if you've got kids and more than one console how it would be the obvious choice over buying retail, be it new or used. Gaming is expensive and if it's a hobby you enjoy it pays to investigate more economical ways to go about it.

I'm new to participating in a forum, hope this is where I reply? I see the date is Aug.2009, This is Apr. 6,2010, is anyone still there?
I read through your game forum, I also prefer to buy, income is low. I have played many of the Free Mahjong games online , & Do Not like the 60min. time limit;I don't want to be ONline, but rather just me & my own quiet games .I just want a relaxed time owning 2 or 3 kinds of Mahjong, & the Solitaire & Boardgames, by Hoyle.
My lap top came with a few GREAT MS games ,(Mahjong, only 6 layouts I know by heart, & only 3 kinds of Solitaire But I am looking for only 2 kinds of games, Ancient Mahjong China & Japan, with 40 or more layouts, & Other similar classic Mahjong, also Hoyle Solitaire with 40 or more kinds, & Hoyle Boardgames .There is a combined Mahjong Ancient China & Japan for sale on line , How do I know if it's good, or is a legal copy? I have a Asus lap top Duel processor, Win7,home premium 64bit, 4Gb.
I bought The CivilazationIV Complete Edition games , thinking it might be fun,(I loved 15th century Myst game & all it's follow up ones, on my XPpro desktop). Civilization installed fine, & plays part way,the villagers start out after the nearby lions, & then stops.I also bought a New & Improved Hoyle Card games, But the cards are so small, & choices are nothing like my other XP Hoyle Card game software. I had tried to install my XP Hoyle software on the Win7 laptop but it wouldn't install right. How do I know who to Buy these Old fasioned games from? Best buy doesn't have them? Is there local stores that sell them, & how do I know if they are new, & not just illegal copies? Hope someone reads this, greatgrandmabunny

Hi and welcome to the forum. I too have all the games in the Myst series. I do buy games online, usually from Amazon.com. Being a Disabled Vet on a Limited Fixed income, I will get them used from GameStop as well. As far games like Mahjong and Hoyle, you can usually find them at WalMart. My Nephew has played the Civilization stuff, but I haven't. I don't know if BestBuy has games, but I would think so. Laptops are somewhat limited in as far as playing games due to the hardware ( primarily the graphics package ). Your Laptop is a good one and has good specs, although I don't know what graphics package it has. It is in all likelyhood an onboard chipset of some sort, which generally don't handle the more graphic intensive games such as Civilization too well. I haven't even attempted a game on my Laptop ( my Mother does play Solitaire on it though ). I have two desktops to do that on as well as a PS2 & PS3. If you by a Game from say WalMart or Gamestop or even online from Amazon.com, you can be assured they are not bootlegged copies. Even the used games from GameStop are the real deal, although in some cases you may not get the manuals for the games. I usually won't buy a game that doesn't have all the material. coastie
