I just bought another computer because my last one crashed. Some kind of hardware malfunction but it had given me enough problems so i just got a new one. Anyways. On the hard drive from the other computer were some pretty critical files. Now i plugged my HD into my new computer but when i get to my F:/Documents and Settings/Jacks it says it is not accessable and the Access is Denied. I assume this is from me having a password on the welcome screen for this profile. I need to know how to get around this problem so I can have my old files back. My old computer isnt working so I can't just pop it in there and fix my problem. ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED. Thanks!-Cory

Can you read other files that aren't in that folder? Did you encrypt your My Documents folder? That would make inaccessable.

Did you change the jumper settings on the old drive? It probably has to be set to slave.

the folder is read only at all times and when I look at properties it says it is empty. I'm sure Windows just locked the folder from any other access because I had a password on my XP Profile. so i dont know what to do

Was it your HD that crashed, cause if it is, then taht to be the problem. If not, then try to plug in the old drive as Master and use the new one as Slave (change the jumpers) and try to drag the files to the new one using the old, rather than using the new to get the old.

I dont know i this will contribute to helping but I have the same problem with accessing files on an old internal hard drive now connect via USB. Its a standard laptop hdd and it had been damaged due to my unability to control my anger haha. I went to get a replacement HDD and i noticed the guy at the repair shop was able to get around the security on the old HDD (because i also had a password for my files in documents & Settings) by using the Data Management tool on the Administrative Tools menu. I am not too experienced with IT as most of the people are on this website but i am guessing that you can try going on to disk management (on the list in computer mangement) and right click on the hdd that you wish to extract data out of and there should be somthing to do with change user rights. Again i am not sure if this can be done from the things mentioned but i do know it can be done from administrative toolsHope this helps to find a solution if you havent already solved it.James

Yes. I have exactly the same problem! The only diffrence is that my old hard disk is completely fine. I just wanted a bigger hard disk space, so I bought a new one, installed windows into it and used the new HD as my primary. On top of that, I've bought a new computer. And my HD is Sata, which does not have slave/master option (i think). Same thing. I want to get files from the Documents and Settings file from the old HD and it says Access Denied. Can please someone help us???

Having the password there is cauing the problem - there can be some work arounds, but lets try this one - never actually did it before to see it will work, but here is our chance!Use the Backup program in XP and backup the location of where your files are located in the F: drive to a backup file on your desktop. Once you have done that, then restore them to a ALTERNATE location, probably a new folder on your desktop, and in that procedure it asks if you want to restore security settings etc, uncheck them - see if it works. If it does, let me know, like I said never tried it before - and don't worry - you will not lose any data.Failing that we will try some more proven methods.

Try swapping the drives, and backing up what you want on an external hd, cdrws, or dvdrws. Then swap the drives back.Or, after you swap the drives, remove the password on your profile and try accessing it again.

Boot to safe mode Right-click the folder then click Properties.Click the Security tab, and then click OK on the Security message (if one appears).Click Advanced, and then click the Owner tab.In the Name list, click your user name, or click Administrator if you are logged in as Administrator, or click the Administrators group. If you want to take ownership of the contents of that folder, select the Replace owner on subcontainers and objects check box.Click OK, and then click Yes when you receive the following message:You do not have permission to read the contents of directory folder name. Do you want to replace the directory permissions with permissions granting you Full Control? All permissions will be replaced if you press Yes.Click OK, and then reapply the permissions and security settings that you want for the folder and its contents.reboot
