I have no doubt this has been answered many times replete the forum but...I was wondering what people's suggestions are for a good student laptop. My uses are general firefox use, word processing, and downloading of "files" on soulseek. I get a fair number of "files" from slseek. Don't do games, on occasion watch dvds (3x a year at most), burn some cds, that is it. looking to spend 1500ish max. travel on planes abit for work so weight is a concern (obviously). Any brands to ignore? Any specific models or specs? What about the windows compatible Apple's? Are those any good? Thanks!

Seems like most basic laptops should work for you. Since you don't do games or video editing or anything else that is really tough, you may just want to go to like a Best Buy or Circuit City and see what bargain laptops they have as most should have DVD drives now I'd think. If you want to go with a Mac, that would be an idea though if you are really used to Windows then I would think twice about whether or not you are conditioned to things in windows that may be different in a Mac. Regards,JB

Although things are done a little differently on a Mac, I personally found the switch from Windows to Mac very easy.I don't have one of the new Intel Mac laptop, but my friends at Macworld are very happy with theirs.

As Kellie said, the switch from Windows to Mac for most people isn't that hard.If you're looking for a cheap computer, most of HP's computers are reasonably priced. As for Macbooks, everyone seems pretty happy with them, though they may go up a few hundred bucks over your budget, due to the protection plan and such.

I wold recommend HP dv series, dv2000. they r small light and well featured for every student When i was at ur place i bought a toshiba qosmio F20. they have a lot of power n features but they r too bulky to carry. They r the best to work on, with a beautiful screen. they also have TV built-in so that i may watch TV while working and there are lot of thing beside that. But now i think that a laptop should be small n light. thats the 1st pint to consider. i have seen acer laptops they hav a good built quality and they r well priced too. check one out :)

try to get good battery life, and a quiet, light computer. Works wonders in school, if you don't game.

Howdy, I have a gateway cx210x that I use in college. The semester just started so I haven't had too many chances to use it in class, although I am definitely going to start soon. If you want I can let you know how it works out. Bryan

I have a Toshiba Satellite, and while it's battery life is a bit limited (only about 3 hours--but it's an old one) it still does a pretty decent job. If all you want is the basics, it's a pretty good choice.
