Coastie: I haven't seen the soda for sale yet here in Norcal. It's got to be A&W. In the old days we used to love the frostie mugs. In Hawaii we had to drive to the other side of the island for the only A&W. We'd get the float and a half gallon to take home.

Hi Lil,
Yeah, I had the privilege to watch Michael Phelps get his 7th Gold Medal and tying the record with Mark Spitz.
Then, last night I saw the relay race where he used his gigantamous arms to help his team get a leading edge, and they went on to Win!!
I was screaming, clapping, crying, just so happy for him! (I had to do all of that quietly, because it was after 11pm and my roommate was already sleeping) but it was one of the most exciting things I've seen in a long, long time! They showed some pics of a NFL game in Baltimore, that had already finished, but people had stayed in the stadium because they were showing Michael Phelps in huge screens and people were jumping up and down, screaming, and stuff. Well, that just gave me chills right now. hehe
Hi MPH,
I think that all together he has 16 Medals, 8 of them Gold, I silver (I saw that one too) 7 WRs and I don't remember the other ones.
He's really an amazing guy.
EDIT ~ It was not at a Baseball game, it was at an NFL game.

Hi All. Okay, it is obvious that Michael Phelps is one of, if not the greatest, Olympic athletes in history. I want to make sure we give him his just recognition. I did some digging and found that:
- in 2004, he earned eight medals overall six gold and two bronze
- this year, he earned eight gold medals
So his grand total is 14 Gold medals and two bronze medals. My reference for the 2004 Olympics is here.

Hey MPH!!
Now , I don't want to take anything away from Michael Phelps but, he is
the greatest Olympian in the Swimming Pool and not the greatest
Overall Olympian.
There are others that have feats just as great but might not be as
publicized as Michael's was.

mjd, We had something here when I was growing up with the big frozen mugs called Twin Kiss Root Beer. I never saw an A&W until I got in the Northeast. As Far as Bottled Root Beer goes, Dad's & Hires was the Root Beer around here. I also like Ginger Beer & Birch Beer. coastie

I usually only eat twice a day, breakfast and dinner. I found I spent too much for lunch when away from home, so I decided to skip it. My breakfast is usually three eggs over easy, two 3 inch canadian bacon slabs, two pieces of toast with cream cheese, 8 ounces of V8, 8 ounces of pineapple juice and 16 ounces of whole milk. I then fill a commuter mug with 12 ounces of coffee. That's how I can skip lunch, besides I found that I would get sleepy in the mid afternoon if I ate lunch. Dinner is most often a normal meal, a bowl of salad, red meat, a starch, either pasta or potato and a vegatable. I have no weight problems, remaiming around 175 as long as I work everyday.

Hi Flashorn. There was an image of the start of that 100 meter race that really showed how much he was pumping steroids. I could not find that picture, but I did find another shot that really shows his swollen shoulders:

This is not as definitive as the image I remember but, yeah, it is a shame.

There was an extensive discussion on Fox News last night about Phelps and the Speedo Razr swim suit and all the records that have been broken. Apparently the suit has no seams, so it reduced drag. Phelps physique is a key to his swimming prowess. His arms are longer than normal for someone his height, indicating a height of 6' 7", but he is in fact only 6' 4". His legs are a little shorter than normal for someone his height. I have a younger friend (his father is a long term friend of mine) whos physique is like that. Father is 6' 2 and son is 5' 10", yet when they sit side by side they are the same height.
Next, Phelps shoe size is 14, and his ankles are double jointed so he has the ability to use his feet sort of like flippers.
I think steroids would work against a swimmer not in favor. After all, the bulking up effect that is a hallmark of it's use, would increase the drag in water and slow the individual down.
