not sure where exactly to post this because im looking for something on the mac and windows side of things
for training purposes, system testing evaluation, and skill sharpening, im looking for a system crash/server down simulator program
the key word is simulator, not actually crashing the server
just a few examples of some of the areas i would like to test for ensuring system stability and reliability and to train newbs-
the program would be nice to test the I wonder if scenarios
i wonder if the system could handle a disk failure on a raid5 disk without user interruption
i wonder if the server could handle/control a memory leak
i wonder if the system could stay running if the primary cooling fan failed or how long before temperature threshold limits are reached
i don't want the program to actually crash the server or hinder its usefulness in any way
i want to be able to simulate different sorts of system failures (hardware, o/s, and software) from a bad kerberos authentication key to user directory corruption to a crash of the afp/smb/ftp/nfs communication server (all data in and out of the server is halted)
is there such or is my idea just a theory yet to be developed?
thanks

C4L: It would take a little research to find the right board edge oin to simulate different control failures but one of the tricks I used to use was to add a strip of scotch tape to a board edge to simulate a control chip failure. Or even isolate a five volt supply to a board. Removing a oin from a connector would work for fans and temp sensors too.

im mainly looking for the software/operating system side for simulation of crashes
hardware failure simulation is nice to have, but i don't really need to do extensive hardware tweaks it unless its integrated in a software program
plus, some of the computers are servers mounted in a rack so the components aren't easily accessible...
but thanks for the tips, if i need to test my temps sensors to make sure they are behaving, i will try your pin technique
thanks
