Just read an interesting article on a company called Yello Storm, releasing a new product allowing users to monitor power consumption via the internet:

Networking giant Cisco could learn a whole lot from its partnership with German utility Yello Strom, which I once called the coolest utility in the world, and which focuses heavily on smart grid consumer hardware and the use of the Internet for the power grid. While Cisco included Yello Strom as a partner in its smart grid announcement last month, the networking company announced more details about a 70-home pilot project using Yello Strom’s sophisticated “Sparzähler” or smart meter this morning. If Cisco aims to some day develop a Linksys-based home energy management product, the project detailed today could provide some important information for that effort. (Source: Earth2Tech)

The Yello Strom Sparzähler ("savings meter") is designed to change theway consumers use electricity. Made of a communications moduleintegrated with an electrical meter, the Sparzähler not only measureselectrical usage, it also provides consumers with actionableintelligence on the real-time power consumption of household devices. During paranoid moments, I constantly wonder whether I am actually paying a fair amount for my energy consumption. This seems like it'll be a big hit in the US if it can be licensed with the bigwig energy companies.

Here's some eye candy:

Kyle, the environment matters! A whole nation away in California, some of us (like me) really are hyping on the environment. In fact, most of us are. The one thing we don't need is wasted power. Just as there is Twitter, which allows people to "microblog" or create blogs on channels within the Twitter site without the need for knowledge of HTML, there should be "micorgeneration" of power, or all of us working on power together and selling the excess.
Best regards,
