I would like to know where in the world is the best prices for electronics. I am in Singapore on a sailboat and will be traveling the east for a year. I need to buy a new notebook computer, netbook to take ashore, a new Ipod, and an Iphone.
Prices here in Singapore aren't any different than Best Buys when you add shipping. Someone I met was pleased with his price for an Iphone in Hong Kong. Does
anyone have opinions on what place would be best? I won't be going to Japan...tooo expensive...we travel and buy with economy

Hi Alexis and welcome to the forum. I too have traveled that part of the world. I was scheduled to go to Singapore, but it was changed at the last minute and went to Bangkok instead. I didn't find things all that expensive in Japan ( was in Sasebo). Hong Kong ( they had good prices, at least on tailored clothes) or Taiwan ( I was in Kaoshiung) might be good. Now that having been said, I have found some thriving black markets where stuff was dirt cheap ( mostly in the Philippines, but some elesewhere). Out of all that, if you are planning a visit to Hong Kong, it may be worth the visit. Although a majority of things such as Watches and software are bootleg, in the back alley markets primarily, but elsewhere as well, Most electronics aren't. I can tell you of an instance where I bought a Fender Stratocaster Guitar for $25 - $50 ( This was in Olongopo City, Philippines). When I got back to the ship ( I was in the service at the time), I was told I would either have to sand the name off of it or trash it. Apparantly, it was a bootleg copy and wouldn't be allowed back in the States with the name on it ( Those things ran around $500 - $600 in the States). Incidently, I did buy a Seiko Watch while in Japan for $25 USD that sold for over $300 in the states ( A lot of guys did). These were the real deal, they were just much cheaper in Japan. Again, Hong Kong may be a good bet.
On another thought, I wish the game designers would keep us "Older" Gamers in mind when designing those things. The Younger gamers have better reactions than us guys, so they get a bit tough at times.

Thanks for all the info...we did find out today that Hong Kong is the best place to get an unlocked Iphone which we need for the different countries we go.
My Mr who is 62 plays games...usually war stuff...he was a Navy Pilot.
Actually recently sailing a 38' boat across from Indonesia to Singapore with 166 ship targets on our AIS was like a real slow game of Frogger!!! Dodging the ships in the channel and then oil rigs.
We were put on to some other locations to buy electronics at more bargain prices so we will check it out. What I want is like 42nd St in NYC only cheaper!!!

Hi, Yeah for a Coastie, I got in a bit of travel. Actually I am a year older ( 63). The ship I was on was Deployed on 1 April 1967 to ComWesPac 7th Fleet, for a tour in Vietnam and thus all the visits in the Far East. We were Homeported at CG Base St, George on Staten Island N.Y. before moving to Governor's Island. My Dad and two brohters were Navy aviation ( Aviation Machinist Mates all). We have a Member / Moderator (rgreen4) who is a former Navy Pilot. As far as 42nd St in NYC goes for shopping, when I was there it was strictly an "ADULT" entertainment area, but has really changed over the years and they ran all stuff out.
As for all the shipping traffic, I hope they realize that a boat under sail has the right of way.
Course those things ( The ships) can't stop nor turn on a dime either. I have a neighbor who travels to Singapore freqently, among other places (He is in Rio now). Usually, if you hit a port that the Navy visits, you can find some good deals. You always have to be careful of "Knock Offs" though. I found when i was shopping over there, I ignored the price tag and started haggling with them and got the price down. I was eventually told that they were insulted if you didn't and just paid the posted price. That is a way of life in that part of the world. I can only assume that it still holds true.
My Nephew does the War stuff. I do some Action / Adventure such as the Lara Croft Tomb Raider series and a lot of RPG's. Nice chart that you posted, has all the information necessary or so it looked. coastie
