Don't forget you've got 30 days to activate Windows before the software is locked out.

in vista you can go upto 120 days i guess. After initial 30 days just put in the rearm command and wow it goes another 30 days and this can be done 2 times i guess.

hmm why would the activation thing make an OS good or bad ?
They have to ensure something to stop illegal copies of their OS. Perfectly fine in my opinion.

Windows Genuine Advantage is used to prevent theft.
Activation is to LOCK the os to your hardware!
BTW - a good friend of mine built a brand new PC, then installed Vista, activated it did his genuine check etc, and when he added 4gb of ram later that week (it was on sale) it made him REACTIVATE! MS will only let you do this a few times before saying it is no longer elligable to be activated!

I guess the original poster used the word activation in both senses.
Coming to true activation , the way they do is sort of necessary. Otherwise how wud keep track of OEM distibution being used on may PCs.

in the same breath should you really have to buy a new license should you buy that machine a new motherboard? Ram? Harddrive? etc...
Or what if my HP dies, and I say to heck with it, and build a new machine, why not transfer the license? Greed.
