I have 2 computers, a desktop and a laptop alternately connected to a Motorola cable modem via ethernet cable. All is well until yesterday when my laptop suddenly can't access the internet. Local Area Connection Status show everything's fine. Ping's ok. I even released and renewed ips but to no avail. As a last recourse, I did an image restore on my drive c, hoping to erase any malware/virus that has infected my system. Alas, nothing positive came out of it, I can't still connect to the internet. By the way, my desktop is ok, I can access the internet with the modem. Is something wrong with my laptop or modem?

Though this may not be the optimal solution. What I did was simple uninstall the modem (hardware and software) and reinstalled everything, as I would out of the box.Worked fine! I also ran into the same problem, where nothing seemed wrong with the notebooks connection to the modem, but I was just unable to connect. Try it out. If not, I'm sure someone will post a better solution. 8)

Get your an inexpensive router with wireless capability and use ethernet cables and you can have both computers going at the same time. You can also later install a wireless card or just buy a usb wireless device and move one of the pc's to another room or spot in your place.Davehttp://www.davescomputerserv.com

@learning2baGURU:If I don't have a decent solution coming, I'll try your suggestion over the weekend when I have the time and not in a hurry.@dacohenz:I'm thinking on the same line. But first, I have to research on the many WiFi routers offered. Based on what I learned on several forums, there are routers that are troublesome and hard to configure.

routers are pretty simple to use actually, with anything there can be virus's made for them but Ive never found any on mine. You can easily reset them as well, besides if you have a laptop (with a wireless card) you'll be happy you got it. Seriously there a breeze to use.IF you want both computers connected and I know thats not what you were looking for, you can hook them up via ethernet port to each other and share a connection (I had to do that when my router was upstairs and I only had 1 wireless adapter)Anyway, with your problem it happens sometimes. What my cable company always says is, unplug 5 secs replug back in.. blah blah... reset... try reparing in your properties in network settings I guess. Its odd that your connected but it won't work, my votes still on the router. It may still not work but its something to try, and when you do get it to work it will be better then switching it out.Do you have msn, sometimes the new one when it logs on tries to troubleshoot why it cannot connect to the internet, mabey it could help you track down the source... the resinstillation of the drivers is an excellent idea too guru.edit_ scratch the computer to computer connection less you have an extra ethernet port, its early and I wasn't thinking. Eitherways, its unstable and slower then a router anyway.

@AuroraManson:Thanks for the advice. I'm not at ease with connections via router or anything else. I'm quite new in this business. Anyway, I've asked a friend of mine who is knowledgeable in networking to drop by this weekend to work out this nagging problem.

cool, whatever suits you, but seriously using a router is generally a lot easier then the stuff you already know how to do (ping, renew ip etc)I think youd be much happier, seriously you just plug it in, even if you have both hardwired I think you'd be happy.its up to you though, I hope your stuff turns out alright.
