In all the reviews mentioned above, I didn't see any mention of the "version" of Windows 7 tested ... or even if they all tested the SAME version. There are at least 6 North American versions - Starter, Home Basic, Home Premium, Professional, Enterprise, and Ultimate. What I'm seeing is the same product hype I saw for Vista. I think that wise computer users will wait at least 6 months before taking the plunge - to see which drivers work and which don't, and to see if the groundswell of public support (not just pro reviewer support) justifies the purchase.

I'm an MSDN subscriber and have been running today's release since early August. I'm not pleased with Windows 7 at all.

(I've been running Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit, btw, AlecWest :)

To anyone who hates Windows 7, I have one thing to ask. What are you going to use instead, XP for the next 10 more years? A Mac? Linux?

I think it's time to get over expecting perfection and get on with whatever progress we have to work with and make the most of it.

On Wednesday, New York Times tech columnist David Pogue gave Windows 7 the thumbs up as well, despite the fact that "it's still copy-protected, it still requires antivirus software, and its visuals still aren't consistent from one corner to another." His bottom line: "looks like 7 is a lucky number after all."

------------

What planet is David Pogue on?

Copy protection is meant to reduce software piracy.

There is no operating system out there that doesn't require anti-virus software.

Visuals are inconsistent? Why didn't David tell Microsoft? He had an entire year to do this. Critical feedback on Vista's UAC helped Microsoft to change UAC in Win 7. If no one complains, don't expect any changes.

What OS doesn't require anti-virus?
I have been running Macs since the Mac+ and have never run protection and have never gotten a virus. I have been running Linux for 2 years and have never had a problem. I ran Vista for 6 months and never got malware. I have also run Windows 7 for a while and never got malware. All I did was lock down the browser (Firefox) and also locked down the email software and ran them in a sandbox. My experience is that anti-virus software is for the terminally uninformed which seems to be most of the people operating a computer. When I am asked by some clueless person what kind of computer they should buy. I always say Mac and invariably they buy a Windows computer and then the problems start. I asked myself a stupid question once. Why don't computer repair shops lock don't clients browsers email software and run them in a sandbox? Duh, they are making money off them and I have had a few admit to it.

As an aside I failed to be clear that I did not run anti-virus software on the Microsoft computers.

I'm going to get Windows 7, in about 3-4 months, but until then, I'm going to run with XP, just because I dislike Vista. And if for some strange reason 7 acts up, I'll continue to use XP till at least most of the bugs are worked out. I have high expectations of 7 though and believe it's going to do really well.

You might as well put this post in your signature, since it appears that you do not say anything else.

I've been using Windows 7 since build 69xx and I've had nothing but great success with it. I've changed some hardware a bit (with my main build), I've used it on an old P4 2.4GHz, and not a single hiccup along the way.

Every OS has it's problems. Linux. Mac OS. Windows. No single person can deny this, and anyone who does is an imbecile.

yes vista service pack 3 is a big jump up from previous versions of vista but why do we have to pay for this service pack (if it was a reasonable 30 bucks i would not mind but 129 here in canada is a bit too much to pay for a service pack look at apple's 29.95 and that seems more reasonable)

i think i will wait 6 to 12 months ( unless i can get it for a decent price) to upgrade to win 7 and let all the early adopters work for micro$oft for free fixing it up aas i worked for free for micro$oft enough already with vista home premium 64 bit

just my 2 cents

I have been running Windows 7 Beta and the RC version since there release. I have not seen a better OS ever released by Microsoft. The bashing needs to stop. All companies have issues with certain products and just because Vista was deemed by review's as a mess, I never saw that either.
I have had absolutely and sincerely no issues with this OS and any drivers I needed for any hardware. I also Have it running on 2 Dell Laptops flawlessly. This will be and needs to be XP's successor.

To bad that you are a MSDN subscriber because from your writing i can understand that you are pretty un-knowledgeable in this field. in the very beginning everyone was bitching how bad and insecure windows xp was. Microsoft did a pretty good job with vista even though people with no tech background like yourself and some journalists who know only to use MS word on their MAC laptops. You can not stop the progress guys windows xp is past and windows 7 is future and pretty good one.

Ahahaha! Are you telling me, "Don't challenge the status quo"? Or maybe "Just go with what you're told to"?

I'm sorry, but I don't follow that kind of sheep mentality. Windows is a consumer product and everyone has the right not to buy it.

Mac is better, though more expensive, but Linux is free, and Ubuntu Linux is even easier to use than Windows. My friend, an XP user for years, loved Ubuntu and immediately switched from Vista.

Microsoft rests on its laurels because it's got a monopoly. It takes that attitude because people like YOU say "I don't care... I have no other choice anyway."
I say vote with your wallet. I'll buy a copy of Windows when Microsoft finally gets it right.

frankly my experience with win 7 has been pretty bad
i had used the beta and RC back when it was released but ignored the problems
but in the final release i was even unable to copy music from my external hard drive
i heard about all the network enhancements in win 7 saying that networking is faster:
but when i copy a file from a network pc to win 7 (about 3 GB) the speed is less than an mb per second while the same machine under ubuntu (jaunty) copied at about 10 mb per second

really very disappointed

Do you realize what you're claiming here? You're claiming that no Windows 7 machine can copy music from an external hard drive? Clearly this is not the case, so the problem is somewhere else... what kind of problems are you running into?

Networking is faster in that its quicker to set up through homegroups, though I have to say I have yet to got my homegroup setting working properly. Currently I've got 4 computers set up in my network (3 Windows 7 machines and 1 linux-based TV) and all of them play together well.

MS and Apple do their numbering a bit different.

6.0 is the Vista kernel. 6.1 is the W7 kernel

Vista is 6.0 build 6000
Vista SP1 is 6.0 build 6001
Vista SP2 is 6.0 build 6002
W7 is 6.1 build 7600
W7 SP1 should be 6.1 build 7601

See the pattern?

OSX goes like this:

Version 0 (Cheeta) - 10.0
Version 1 (Puma) - 10.1
Version 2 (Jaguar) - 10.2
Version 3 (Panther) - 10.3
Version 4 (Tiger) - 10.4
Version 5 (Leopard) - 10.5
Version 6 (Snow Leopard) - 10.6

Yes, VERSION, not operating system. All of those releases are versions of OSX.
Phenom X3 2.3GHz....ASUS 9800 GT 512 GDDR3....4GB G.Skill 1066 MHz DDR2....660 GB @ 3GB/s HD storage....Antec 550W modular PSU....Lite-On 20x sata DVD burner....Samsung 23" Wide-screen....Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
