Hello All, I hope someone can give me some helpful advice .
I recently up graded to Windows 7 from Vista. I have one major problem, it does not have outlook express. I would like to know if there is a way to recover all my outlook express information such as old emails and contacts .
Also is there a way to go back to vista without a clean install , such as prior to the up grade to windows 7.

Also is there a email available to windows very much like outlook express ? Sorry for all the questions
I need help.
THanks Sarg

All I know on the subject is that Microsoft finally removed OE (it should have done this 10 years ago), and is offering Windows Live Mail as a free download to replace it.

I don't know for sure whether or not it can import OE mail.

Once you upgrade you cannot go back without doing a clean install.

Have you checked the program files folder to see if Outlook remains listed?

Are you sure it was Outlook Express? Vista comes with Windows Mail, not Outlook Express, which comes with XP. Anyway, if it was Windows Mail, then all your data should still be there in the folder: C:\Users\{yourlogon}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsMail\LocalFolders. You will be able to access it if you download and install Windows Live Mail, which is free. One additional benefit of using Windows Live Mail is that you can also manage internet mail accounts such as yahoo, gmail etc.

The e-mail program that came with Vista was actually Windows Mail, that although it was very similar to Outlook Express was also a little different. Windows 7 does not come with an e-mail program as you have discovered. However, Microsoft does offer a similar program via download called Windows Live Mail. KStrawn has listed the website.

If you did an inplace upgrade, then your e-mails should still be in the folder C:/Users/{username}/AppData/Local/Microsoft/WindowsMail/LocalFolders.

Hey Thanks, It was windows mail, although I can not seem to locate the email messages even after I use : C:\Users\{yourlogon}\AppData\Local\Microsoft\WindowsMail\LocalFolders. I am sure it saved it somewhere , but I have no idea where to go, and how would I open it. Even in Live Windows Mail, I can not send or receive email, the mail box will not open
Thanks
Sarg

Using Windows Explorer, not Windows Live Mail, look in the folder Local Folders and the path I listed. What folders do you see under that?

Hey
Thanks for all the advice. I still can not find any old emails . I have searched I guess every where on the computer using the advice you gave. I am so over Windows 7 . I can not send or receive any messages, heck the mailbox will not evben open. I will try another day or so to find the emails, then a total clean insall of Vista.

If Windows Live Mail will not open then you need to uninstall all the Windows Live installs and then download them again. Once you get Windows Live Mail open, it is easy to set up to receive e-mails, but if you get a server error, you may need to contact your ISP for assistance.

Depending on you mail provider, you may be able to use it as web mail. I use both Earthlink and Windstream (my ISP) mail as webmail. Then all you need is the browser. The increasing popularity of webmail is one reason there is no built in mail program in Windows 7. I downloaded and installed Windows Live Mail on a test machine running Windows 7 RC since I knew I would be losing Windows Mail. I do not use Windows Mail as my prime e-mail program, but use it to archive those e-mails I want to keep. I had no problem downloading and installing it, nor did I have problems setting it up to receive e-mails, simply copying over from Windows Mail the settings.

However, even after duplicating the Windows Mail settings (from my main machine), I could not get it to send an e-mail, as I was getting an error message about server authentication. I finally got it working, but only after getting ISP technical support for the exact settings.

You can export your email and contents from Outlook. I've been able to do that in past version with contacts but I never got emails import and export to work so I just start over. I allways back up my important music, pictures and important file just in case i will be gettin a new machine in the future.
