I used this dvd writer to install Windows 7. I can boot from the writer so there must be some low level control of the device. When I first installed Windows 7 it recognized it, however after a day or two, the drive disappeared.

My XP Pro boot know's it's there. I used the Add Hardware wizard to see if I could find it, NG.
This is an internal drive connected to an IDE to SATA adapter, I ran out of IDE channels. The Bios knows it is there.

Any thoughts? I posted this on a MS forum and got nothing useful. Typical.

Hi,
Try completely unplugging the drive and boot into w-7.
After you completely boot, shutdown/unplug and reconnect the drive.
Powerup and boot into w7. Hopefully it will see it as a new device and you'll be fine.

I just had a strange experiance with my DVD/RW drive. Device manager was clear, it said I had the best driver already installed and upgrade advisor said it was compatible. Well I don't think so now.

I think some of us will find not everything is as compatible as it seemed it would be.

Sorry it didn't help.
Being windows installs the genaric driver for the device.
I wonder if you uninstall the driver then follow my steps already noted it would work. If the ROM is OK windows should see at as a new device and reinstall the driver.
Perhaps you may want to tell the bios its not installed if you try this again. When rebooting after reconnecting enter bios first and set it back to auto detect.

With the driver still there perhaps it caused our attemp to fail?

Strange your bios sees it but not the OS, at least w7, when it recognized it earlier.
Does the LED on it flash during boot?

If you try again to get it to recognize it as suggested earlier, sorry to not think of the driver earlier.

I will snoop the internet with you, hopefully we'll find more to go by.

I finally got it to be recognized, however it is recognized as a hard drive. As such, I can not read the data on either CD's or DVD's. This is becoming quite comical.
Don't kill yourself looking for a solution, eventually I will find one or just get a newer drive.

NP, to bad it wants to put up a fight.

I have two DVD/RWs, both about 2 yrs old, IDE interface. The ATAPI doesn't work right with W7 professional, removed to backup PC running w-7RC and is happy.
The lite-on is fine in both RC and Professional. Whats the difference? Beats me.

Hope you find your solution soon and if you do will you please post the answer?

I finally got it to be recognized, however it is recognized as a hard drive. As such, I can not read the data on either CD's or DVD's. This is becoming quite comical.
Don't kill yourself looking for a solution, eventually I will find one or just get a newer drive.

Once it was recognized, I went into device manager and de-installed the driver then rebooted. When I rebooted, everything worked. We will see how long it lasts.

I haven't had this much fun with device drivers since NT Server.

Update, one day later. The drive, while still being recognized, has a hard drive icon now. When I place a cd or dvd in the drive, the name of the disk shows and I can read the data. Still very quirky. I am anxious to see what tomorrow brings.

I only have one Ide channel on my mother board. I have two EIDE drives and 3 SATA drives and the IDE dvd writer. I bought an IDE to SATA adapter for the DVD drive. I didn't want to mix DVD and Hard Drive on the same channel. That is the configuration that didn't work with Windows 7. I took the Master Hard drive and put the SATA adapter on it, configured the DVD drive as Master and connected it along with the Slave Hard Drive to the IDE channel. This is the configuration that worked in Windows 7. I find it interesting that my original configuration worked in XP all the time and for two days in 7 before giving up the ship. I suspect something in one of the initial updates messed me up. I just love M$.

I had a failure to recognize a drive problem on my Toshiba laptop running Vista Ultimate, and on my HP desktop running XP pro. The common thread turned out to be that both units were running Norton 360 antivirus(After much cursing and head scratching I might add). Uninstalling Norton 360 and re-installing it fixed the drive recognition issues. Don't ask me why. I know just enough about computers to be dangerous.

I use MS Security Essentials as my security/virus/etc.

I ended up blowing away the partitions to both XP and Win7. I reloaded XP, bought a new DVD burner, added another drive for Win 7 and started over again.

As of today, everything works as it should. Far too much hassle. Fortunately I anticipated a problem and put all of my data on other drives. I am about to see if adding Ubuntu 9.10 will blow things up or not. Fingers are crossed.
