First off, welcome to the land of trying W7 on a Sony PC. I'm on the same page. But I love W7.

The symptoms you're describing ("hanging, freezing, shutdown time...") do not sound OS related. I would be more suspicious of either driver conflicts or problems with an application, especially a factory-installed security suite. Blue screening is also sometimes caused by faulty RAM.
Also, you're currently running an rc (which is still a beta build, technically speaking) so you're results will vary if you install the final release version of Win7. One more consideration: downgrading to WinXP will only be possible if Sony has the correct XP drivers for your computer.

The problem is when you do an upgrade to an OS that is having problems those problems aren't removed. A clean install is your best bet. You will probably see better performance with a clean install of either XP, Vista or Windows 7 rather then being able restore back to Vista.

If you have a 32 bit computer and can do a clean install of XP, do it.
While it is true that all support for XP will end in 2014... ask yourself this question: How likely is it that you'll even be using this computer 5 years from now?
Compnovo makes a good point about drivers. Before installing XP, make sure to download all XP drivers for your computer. (And burn them to CD or DVD since you'll be erasing the hard drive when you do the clean install)

The recovery partition is usually quite small (5GB or less). The best time to delete it is before you install XP. But, since you've already started that process, you can continue to ignore the existence of this partition. There is no need to delete it though.
edit: While it can be deleted later, I wouldn't bother with it. You won't gain much from it.

I think I agree with a poster here where it maybe hardware/software related. To test this if you were doing ok on the Vista install that came with the laptop you should of tried going back to that, if that acted up then you know it's hardware related. I think going backwards to XP on a system made for Vista may just bring it's own set of problems, mainly with recognizing drivers for important stuff like video, sound, wifi - etc.
On another note, I installed Windows 7 beta then to RC on my Gateway laptop and it rendered the restore partition unusable because OEM's set a key in boot to get to it, once you load in another OS it changes that boot, in other words I can no longer press F12 to get to the recovery partition to redo the laptop. I do have the original recovery on disk but it is handy to have the restore on board rather then dig out disk and use that. I think when I run the recovery in March when the RC dies it may restore this though.
For some reason Sony does seem to be a problem child over other OEM's but it seems like they try to hard to reinvent the wheel rather then go with usual stuff. I guess since they usually charge a smidgen more for their systems they feel obligated to make then a little different?

I presume that when you say everything is going, that everything is working properly. If this is true, then I wouldn't worry about the difficulty you're having with installing the drivers.
Is everything working properly?
