Beverley: Welcome to PC World community forums.
These nasty little viruses seem to be happening more and more. One thing I have noticed id the more recent occurance of "flash" worms or trojans. They in filtrate your machine by "flashing" the BIOS. The orignal virus installs itself by re-writing part of the BIOS so that it installs itself every time you boot. Even using virus checkers may find it and delete it, you reboot the next day and it's back. Try "malwarebytes" and see if it can rid you od this virus. The only other cure would be to do a reset of the BIOS to DEFAULT and that would force the BIOS to load from the firmware chip and not the "flash" chip.

Hi :

Malwarebytes Anti-Malware is the Best 1st Choice
for dealing with the "Rogue" Alpha Antivirus .
The Experts at bleepingcomputer.com also recommend
looking for and deleting the following IF found :

"Associated Alpha Antivirus Files:

c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\AlphaAV
c:\Program Files\Common Files\Uninstall
c:\Program Files\Common Files\Uninstall\AlphaAV
c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\AlphaAV\Alpha Antivirus.lnk
c:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Start Menu\AlphaAV\Uninstall.lnk
c:\Documents and Settings\Bleeping\Desktop\Alpha Antivirus.lnk
c:\Program Files\Common Files\Uninstall\AlphaAV\Uninstall.lnk
c:\WINDOWS\system32\msnaoladdon.dll

Associated Alpha Antivirus Windows Registry Information:

HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{A77D3539-581D-450C-9E44-A84C415A6172}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects\{A77D3539-581D-450C-9E44-A84C415A6172}
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\5.0\User Agent\Post Platform "WinNT-PAI 05.10.2009"
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run "AlphaAV" "

However, you did not SPECIFICALLY identify the
"Source" of the Popups !?

Just a word here: Even if you were to scan using Avast, I doubt it will remove this.
