had windows 7 installed on my rig for a couple of weeks so decided it was time to load some games on there. I chucked on Oblivion, GRAW 2, Star Wars Empire at War and Rome Total war.

So here i am sitting here all smug ready to jam some games, and what do i get? Bad frame rates. im lucky if i get 30fps on oblivion with medium detail, im sure i should be getting around 50 on full, i get 15fps on very low settings, and the same with star wars, RTW gets 50 so thats fine.

If anyone could shed some lighton my problem i would be soooo happy. Heres my specs:
CPU: Intel Pentium E2180 Conroe
GPU: Asus EN8600gt (not the passively cooled model)
Ram: 2GB G-SKILL DDR2-800
Motherboard: Gigabyte EP35 DS3L
OS: Windows 7 Ultimate 32bit

What resolution are you playing at? Neither the E2180 nor the 8600GT are pieces of "gaming" hardware. FWIW, the E2180 is an Allendale, not a Conroe, and it's a cut down Allendale at that (I know CPUz calls it a Conroe, but it's wrong). If you're willing to OC, you should be able to push your E2180 over 3GHz with that DS3L. That'll give you some help, but the 8600GT is just not a very powerful card. If you're trying this at a high resolution, you may be able to back it down some and get respectable framerates.

That silly CPUz, lieing to me. I know the cpu and gpu are POS, but limited budget and im not a hardcore gamer so they seemed fine to me at the time. The cpu is OC'd to 2.4ghz, and the gpu is OC's a bit too. Im running games at 1024*768 cause i have to use my old LCD cause the old on broke on me. Oh yeah, im getting only about 15fps on GRAW 2 on the lowest settings as well

Hey Snyper, Actually, the 8600GT does pretty well, at least with the games he mentioned. I have played a lot of Oblivion with that card, with the settings pretty well cranked up in the "High" setting. Trying to use the "Ultra High" setting could present some problems though. I was running an EVGA 8600GT before going to the EVGA 9800GT. If he is going to run a C2D, then I would suggest something with a bit more muscle such as a E6700 or E6800, if you can find one.

I've never played any of the games in question, so I'll take your word for it Coastie. I also see people online saying that Oblivion plays alright on an 8600GT, so there must be another issue. An E2180 @ 2.4GHz isn't going to squeeze an 8600GT a whole lot.

Fatesjester- do you have the correct drivers installed for the video card? Do you have a way of monitoring it's temperature and the temp of the CPU? Maybe something is thermal throttling?

OC'd the cpu to 2.7ghz last night but got a bit hot so lowered it down to 2.6ghz.
Um yeah, i got the right drivers. Had a look at the temps, its gets to about 52-53 degrees celcius when gaming

Ok. The CPU temp seems to be fine. The GPU temp will be a bit higher which is normal. There could be an issue with Win7. Seems I read somewhare about games not faring too well on Win7 and it was recommended to run them in the XP emmulator or what ever it is they put in Win7.
