Hello,

I was wondering if I could get some feedback on what you all think of Norton's Antivirus auto renewal rates. I currently have version 16.7.2.11 and have enabled the annual auto renewal subscription feature since installing Norton Antivirus in 2006. Last year I was billed $42.95 and this year's pending renewal rate is $44.99. Are these subscription rates close to industry standard? Seems just a little excessive when I can go to Staples and purchase Norton 2010 for 1 PC for $39.99 ($9.99 after $30 rebate). Thanks for your feedback!!

Hi there Balok,i have NİS2009 and i renew my sub manually every year.Don't like the annual auto renewal as i prefer to keep the control. As far as the rates are concerned,i believe them to be close to industry standart, although some would think them steep.İ would notify Norton about your concern, and see what they reply back.
You might just get a pleasant suprise.

Hi Balok :

Rather than pay an excessive amount for the poor
peforming Norton ( they had a low 35% "Prevention"
Rate on the latest "Retrospective/proactive" test
done by the INDEPENDENT RESEARCHERS at
http://www.av-comparatives.org . In the same test,
the FREE Avast Antivirus Home Edition had a higher
42% ; to check out this program, view the Info at
http://www.avast.com...ntispyware.html .
I made a switch from Norton to Avast a little
over 4 years ago and never regretted that decision .

I believe that is nominally on par with other anti-virus definition renewal rates.

You will generally find that is likely cheaper to just upgrade to the new version, which will typically include a year of virus definitions upgrades. At least that is what I found. Of course, you then have to deal with whether or not the new version is crap or not. Back when I used to use Norton Anti-virus, they had a period of time where the new versions got worse and worse...they became more and more resource hogs. So, I had decided to stick with an older version and just upgrade the virus definitions, even thought it tended to cost me a bit more. Then I go fed up with Norton altogether, but that is not relevant to your question.

Hi again Balok,it pays to keep in mind that Norton of today,is nothing of what it used to be 4 or even 3 years ago.We all have our preferences, and what others are happy with,we may not be,and vice versa, and that's just fine.

We all stick with what we are happy with, and i am happy with my NİS2009.

Thanks for the feedback everyone. I'll probably just "suck it up" and pay for another year of virus protection. Norton seems to be doing a pretty good job of keeping my PC virus/trojan free.

Hi Tom :

It would be wise to check the effectiveness of Norton
by using the FREE Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware and
"SUPERAntiSpyware" .
For what you are paying for the low performing Norton,
you could have the high performing "NOD32" from
Eset Software, which has excellent Online Support
Forums IF a "problem" comes up as contrasted with
notorious poor "Support" from Symantec/Norton .

I just got a new computer and the first piece of bloatware going ou the door ids Norton. I have been running Avast! for sometime and am perfectly happy with it. No way, I would stand for some some subscription service with a debatable track record and ever increasing rates. FREE fits my budget nicely and Avast! is reliable. Another FREE service is Avira. Microsoft is on the verge of coming out with something, but the jury will be out on that for a while.

Hi again Tom,i too have the the same version as you,in NİS2009 the security suite, that saved my laptop from a rogue download just the other day.
My son clicked on a link for a legitimate site, that had been hijacked and Norton blocked the rogue download and protected my computer very effectively.

So as you can imagine i am very happy with it,and definetely recommend the program.
