My favorite iPhone/iPod Touch app would have been the incredible money-saving idea PCW printed in the June, 2009 magazine about making free phone calls by adding a simple headset and a Skype trick ("39 Astounding Things Your Hardware Can Do").

But since I missed that issue, and PCW refuses to put their feature articles online -- forever -- then I can only sit here and grouse about it. And envy the guy who wrote the letter thanking PCWorld for the idea.

Yeah. Thanks a lot. That's the way to re-use valuable content.

It is rather simple. Go to the App Store on your iPhone/iPod Touch, find the Skype App, download and install it. Then get a headset (which you should already have if you have an iPhone...but not if you have an iPod Touch) and start using the Skype App to call other Skype users. And since that time, AT&T has supposedly reversed course and will now permit the Skype App to work over their 3G network in addition to working over WiFi...but I do not know if the Skype App has be updated and re-approved by Apple to enable this...yet.

I'm a little biased since I develop games and apps for iPhone :)
But the games I have spent the most time playing have been Flight Control, geoDefense, and TapDefense.
Cheers,

So, subcribe to Skype, go to the App Store and download skype for your Touch/iPhone, buy the apple headset with mic, find WIFI and make calls. This is not rocket science and I've been using Skype on my Touch for four months. It works a treat

My favorite is iNight London to find venues opened after midnihgt in London. It has a geolocation with the latest gigs and parties.

iRoach 2!!!
I love this game and have been running down my battery playing it. It was challenging at first to get the timing, now I'm killing more and more of these bugs. This one is highly recommended!

Android...

Advanced Task Killer
To kill stuff. The more crap you accidentally leave running in the background, the more likely you will have a short battery life, and the poorer the performance for foreground apps.

Mr. Number (Free)
A decent call blocker. Lots of spam handling capabilities, and the option to block annoying people, or ranges of numbers (i.e. ALL numbers beginning with 800, 888, 877, 866) and send them straight to voice mail, without ringing the phone. It's not the whole world's RIGHT to make your phone ring. Takes a little experimentation to set it up. Be sure to call your phone with another phone and configure it RIGHT, so it doesn't piss you off. By default, the notification was on top if my 'Answer' button, but there was a setting to move it.

Google Voice
I use it for my voice mail. It also redirects calls to the Google Voice number to as many phones as you need it to. Also lets you receive calls from gmail. The Google Voice applet lets your outgoing calls go through google voice, so you can pretend that's your 'real' number.

xScope
I only have one use for this browser: The 'user agent' setting that allows the browser to pretend to be a 'real' computer. So you can go to a web site and see the 'normal' content without being gimped to a retarded 'cell phone' mode. Some video sites that would otherwise block a cell phone work, assuming you have the bandwidth to play it.

Amazon Kindle Reader/Laputa/etc. E-Book reader Software
While the Kindle isn't always handy, the cell phone usually is. Most of them have a separate brightness adjustment for the reader applet. Read a chapter before you go to bed, on da throne, etc.

Fast Customer iphone app. This nifty app lets you select a company you wish to call such as Comcast and then calls the company for you. Once a real human being is on the line, then the app calls you back at the number you indicated and connects you to the person! No more phone trees and horrible elevator music!
