does anyone have any way to be able to retrieve corrupt RAW files. I have taken several photos using my Canon digital XT camera but when I tried to process them I encountered an error message indicating the files were corrupted. Is there anyway to be able to retrieve them or uncorrupt them.

Thanks

Are you getting the message from the camera or from your computer? If the latter, do you still have them on the camera? If so, you might try transferring them to the computer from the camera again. If the former, then try transferring them to the computer to see if you get the same problem with some photo editing program.

what's your processing program/photo editor?

how do you transfer the raw files from the camera to the computer?

Initially I use a card reader to view the files while still on the card. If I use Digital Photo Professional to open the RAW files I get a message the file is corrupted and cannot be opened. If I use Adobe CS4 the files may open but they are mostly distorted with the colors out of whack or not at all. Many of the photos are partially intact. If I transfer them to the computer via the card reader I get the same results. I have contacted Canon about the issue and they have given me suggestions to resolve the problem but what I am looking for is someway to be able to reconstruct the photos I currently have.

Thanks for your help.

next step, try to view a couple test raw shots on a new/spare memory card

question, how many shots have you captured on your main memory card?

try a new raw program for a test

(its free)

In addition to trying a different program to open up the RAW images on the computer, have you tried viewing the images on the camera using the camera's regular playback/view function?

Have you tried transferring the image to another computer? Or use a different card reader with the same computer?

Basically, I am trying to see if we can narrow down where the specific problem might be. In general, the problem could be:

1) The camera is not taking the picture properly at all, so the file is corrupted from the beginning. If this was the case, then you would get a the screwed up image on the camera using the regular viewing/playback function.
2) The camera takes the picture fine, but has a problem writing it to the card or the card is bad. This would similar to #1...even the camera would not display it correctly.
3) The card reader is screwed up and not transferring the image properly to the computer. If so, then the image would display properly on the camera...and would be fine on your computer if you used a different card reader.
4) The card reader is fine, but something the computer is either not allowing the file to be written properly to the computer's drive or read properly. If so, then the image will display fine on the camera and also fine on another computer using the same card reader or a different card reader.
5) Everything is fine, but the software you are using is not opening the file properly. If so, then another program should be able to open it fine...and the camera will display the image fine.

If it is #3, #4, or #5, then your images are basically fine...you would just need to adjust how you are accessing them.

If it is either #1 or #2, then I do not know if there is much we can do. In either case, there is basically data missing or corrupted with the image file...and typically, fixing that is tough, if not impossible.
