Why does it seems like Google is trying to capture Yahoo's features one by one? Mail, Messenger, news, now GROUPS?What do you guys think?

Groups is one of Google's oldest features... or at least the backbone of Google groups is. It started as Deja News and a Usenet archive. You can see Harry McCracken's blog entry on it here.

Yeah, it started as Deja News back in the mid 90's. Sometime near the turn of the century Google aquired it.

Yea i was going to say its been around a while. There are similarities to what yahoo, msn, and google put out. Although google seems to be the more innovating of the bunch.

Maybe google likes Yahoo's features because Yahoo puts out a good product. I, myself, use Yahoo Canada most of the time as my main search engine, my main e-mail account, etc. Sometimes I will use MSN as a search engine, as well, and I do have a hotmail acct.I tried to get a free GMail acct through Google, however, you had to have a current GMail acct holder refer you, in order to get an acct. I did not have that hazzle with Yahoo or MSN, so I did not bother with it. As a result I have Yahoo home page on my firefox browser and MSN on my IE browser. :) peter

I am still mad at Yahoo for giving the chinese goverment the location of that one guy, a democrasist (sp) and they jailed him. No thats just worng. My search of course is google. Gmail started the you gotta be refered for several reasons. The main of which, I believe is to allow a buzz to start, make people feel special and at the same time make sure there massive now 2 gigs of space isn't well wasted in an hour.If people can just sign up and up and up they may lose all there space quicker. Its not hard to find somone with a gmail account to refer you to.You want one I'll give one to you just give me your email. There is no way in hell I'm going to use ie as the holey malware magnent. I like my computer not broken into. .lol

I guess you are right about Yahoo giving out information to a foreign government, and I have to give credit to Google for being the only major search engine provider to fight the US govenment in court and not have to release search information to them. Thanks for your offer to refer me for a google acct, but I do not want to give out my e-mail address on a public forum, thanks anyway. :)

Google is becoming evil. They took over youtube, therefore dominating webvids. No competition means google can do whatever they want, and fear no consiquences.

Thats not nessearily true though, Microsoft is starting there own YouTube competitor but we already know THEY are evil. Yes yes, ok google had google videos but really who posts there.Anyway, i don't see the aquasition of YouTube to be evil unless the abuse it, like say make people pay for directors/musicians/comedian accounts. I just see it as a good business plan, besides I'm hoping they will allow people, at least the special accounts more space now that its google.Like I said before, I have faith in google until they do something to betray it.. like sony's playstation or yahoo lol
