This whole "God Mode" concept is dumb. First of all, it's not a hack. It's simply a hidden, undocumented feature. You don't have to modify or reverse engineer anything to access it. Secondly, you don't have to name it GodMode. That's simply the visible name assigned to the object once it's created. You can put any text you want before the period in that string. I labeled mine Master Control Panel. And finally, it's not really a "godmode" as the term applies to certain classic video games, because it doesn't allow you to do anything you can't otherwise do. It just conveniently arranges all configuration options into one single place, which would be confusing for normal users, but very handy for techies and administrators. Anyway, 'nuff said.

And while we're on the topic, why do they call them "Windows", anyway? It's not like we can see through them or anything.

Somehow these two points seem contradictory...

I like it. I like the discovery. I like the efficiency. What's there not to like? However, if this thing could really be hacked through reverse-engineering, I wouldn't like it...

Well, anything can be reverse-engineered, alas.

For the record, it works in Vista, too.

Creating folder and just naming it with the string. {ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} works with Window 7 32bit and Windows7 64bit as well as Vista 32bit. It will cause Vista 64bit to crash. Using the following method will work in 32bit and 64bit versions of Windows 7 and Vista. Right click on your desktop, select New, then Shortcut. For the location enter the following, explorer.exe shell:::{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} then click next. Name the new short cut anything you wish, and then click Finish. This will create a shortcut on your desktop that will give you access the options available in the folder that some have called “GodMode”.

Me neither. Yawn.

Thanks backbuster and KStrawn for the info!

That's why I am here. To learn as well as share info. I can confirm this works under Win7 x64. And this feature is neat!

Has anyone yet figured out what Ayala's "device managager" is, or how it works?

All it is is a shortcut to the {ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} folder in the registry It's not a hack. It's not a feature.

It's essentially a shortcut.

There are a number of strings that will give you access to folders in Windows 7 that are used by developers. Steven Sinofsky, Windows division president provided a list of commands for creating special folders to cnet. I have not tested these out yet to see how well they work and what options they give you access to. I would strongly caution anyone that wishes to try them out, to not use them on their main rig. You should try them out on a Windows 7 test rig first to see how they work. To try any of them out just create a new folder, name the folder followed with a period and the string you are trying. ( for example, tweaks. {78F3955E-3B90-4184-BD14-5397C15F1EFC})

What took you so long to finally put this in print? It's been available all over the net for weeks.

Ok, it's not a hack. But it also works in Windows Vista. Just tried.

I cut 'n pasted that string as the name for a new folder in my Vista 32 Business laptop and all it does is give me an empty folder.

When I follow the original instructions and put "Godmode." at the beginning of the name the folder is instantly populated with all sorts of tools.

Something wrong there ^ .
