Can anyone help me understand how photos from Paint.net print wrong on my windows pc?
I've made a number of greeting cards following a tip from pc world editor...resize, center on canvas size, place in right half of doubled canvas size, etc...I even used the grid to assure that when folded, the image would appear centered on the front of the folded card when printed. However, when I select print, fit to frame or not ( I tried both) it always prints off center. I tried selecting the picture and moved it off center relative to the canvas and it still prints off center. It's like windows print program is trying to correct my layout? How do I work around this to get my images to print as they appear in paint.net? I'm thinking this is not a Paint.net issue.
If this is not the best place for this problem can anyone suggest a forum.
Thanks in advance.

Hi You didn't say what kind of printer you had. I know that HP has utilities for that stuff. You download the photo to a folder, than using the HP utilities, you set up and print from there. I would presume it would pretty much be the same with other printers. Sounds like it could b a problem with a third party print utility.

Hi coastie65. Thanks for the reply and I have a Dell 946 AIO. Interesting that you mention it because my printer program does not recognize 3rd party Paint.Net. So when I select print the default printer program in Windows Photo Gallery opens. I'm still looking for print preview in there but the picture shows ok with the options,Fit to Frame or do not Fit to Frame. I even tried saving the Picture and printing it from within Dell AIO center and it comes out the same. I have not tried the printers card printing tools.
So my next question is can I make Dell AIO Center recognize Paint.Net?
Thanks again.

Hi Marty, Sorry about being so long getting back to this. I have been rather busy. OK. I am not familiar with Dell's stuff, but as a rule I usually avoid the manufacturers utilities, in fact, I usually strip them out at the first start up. Posted Image I have an HP PhotoSmart All-in-One and tend to use the PhotoSmart Essentials package for the most part. I know in Essentials, I can print a picture on the top half of a page w/borders ( 11 x 8.5 sheet ). if it was a crad, then all I would have to do is fold it over. Any Further printing would be problematic getting that set right, but is doable. I haven't as yet checked out Paint.net to get familiar with it.

Hey Coastie65 not a problem. i do appreciate that anyone responds at all. My problems are more in the category of casual(read hobby) interest than anything else.
Yes I can print nifty cards using Dell's All-In-One printing program, using the saved image. I've had Adobe on this thing as well as MS Digital Image and I played around with GIMP for a bit,so my cup runeth over.
You hit the nail on the head suggesting a third party issue. I found others with printer problems in Paint.Net forums. I installed Simon Brown's printer+plugin which has done nothing for me yet. I'm still on the uphill side of the learning curve.
I'm most curious now as to why or how Paint.Net does not appear as an application when i do an advanced search from within Dell's program since windows lists it when I Click on "open with". The folks at Paint.Net are a little touchy since they offer a lot for free. I don't fault them for that.

Hi Marty, As I said, I'm not familiar with Dell's apps as I have never owned a Dell ( My Brother has a desktop and my sister has a laptop ). From the sounds of it, Dell's apps seem to be a little intrusive and a bit more than I would personally like. I did check out Paint.net and it seems that you get quite a bit for a freebie. Looks to be a good FREE alternative to Printshop, which is a good app for that stuff and something I have used in the past. For as long as I have been playing with these things, I think I am perpetually on the uphill side of the learning curve. Posted Image I am curious if it is listed in Programs, when you open that list. I have seen instances where something is not listed in programs, but is when you bring up the Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel ( Programs and Features in Vista ).

Hey again Coastie65,
Yes paint.Net is listed in programs. Windows shows it as an option to open an image with. When I select an image in Pictures and click on "open with" a drop down menu includes Paint.Net. However, within Dell AIO Center, when I "search for more...programs to send ...an image to, their enhanced search shows 31 apps and paint.net is not one of them.
Once again your response helps in steering me. I'll look in Dell forums for similar problems. If the brains at Paint.Net don't have a clear answer what chance do I have. Again, this is exercise for me and I appreciate your time.

Hey Marty, No problem. I don't know what that Dell AIO Center is, but it is starting to sound like a nuisance and rather intrusive. Personally, I don't care much for stuff that exerts that much control ( the AIO Center apparantly doesn't like Paint.net) as to the apps I run ( guess that's the free spirit in me Posted Image ). Think I'll do some research on that thing ( AIO Center).

Hello coastie65,
Just thought I'd log in with with what I found to be at least part of the answer to my question as it might help others who might stumble over this. turns out it was my ignorance again. while the "enhanced search" in AIO Center doesn't work, Browsing for and opening the .exe file does! So I can add any file to "options to send image to".
Man! If someone could make this stuff less opaque what a wonderful world it would be.
I don't expect to get slick anytime soon which is why I can't thank you enough for your responses which helped steer me. I got nothing from Dell and Paint.Net,which is ok,my problems are nothing in the grand scheme of things.
O, hey thanks for pointing those guns over my head!

Hey Marty, Thanks for posting that as it may help someone else. Yeah, they don't like making things easy. Had me fussing and fuming on occasion. Posted Image I guess the learning experience may be worth it, but at times I wonder about the aggravation factor in the process. I'm glad to hear you made some headway and again, thanks for posting what you found. coastie
