I purchased on line the above sattilite, with a 3 yr. exstended warrenty. Purchased date 8/06/2006.
Last November I started getting the bar code screen, and then it would vanish. December the laptop died, I took it to a authourized dealer and was told the graphics card and it would be aprox. $900.00 to fix. I have not had the laptop for very long, no real gaming, not on all the time, and I kept it clean.
I called toshiba and was told that it was to late and I would have to pony up the cash. It hadn't even been four
(4) years and the GeFource 7800, 512mb was gone. I don't mind paying for something, but at least it should last longer than 3 and a half years?
I went on line and it seems that I am not the only one with this problem. I have 4gig of ram installed to compinsate for the hard drive.
I am a disabled vet, on a limited income of just under $1000.00 per month. I don't think it is right that I should pay for something that shouldn't have happpend to begin with. I can't afford to get it fixed, let alone get the cash to do it. Toshiba should make it right, they are suppose to be one of the best manufactures out there, and the longest of laptops.
I would apprcialte any help at all, I've done my part and now I am disabled,
any help at all is better than the way I have been treated so far.
It took me four years to get the laptop, now I have had to barrow one.

Thank you,
beeks

PS: the internet states that i am one of many with the same problem, Toshiba should make a effort to help us.

Edited out the Serial number information. Under no circumstances should you post the serial number of your computer. It is fine to post the make and model number as that can be helpful.

Hi. First, thank you for your service. I too am a disabled vet drawing a VA Pension which, is as you said, a little short of $1000 per month. I have had Video Cards go out in 6 Mos after purchase. It happens. It is more expensive to deal with that stuff on a laptop than a desktop. I am assuming the $900 was for the total Parts & Labor. I have had my share of stuff that did fine until the warranty ran out, then died. At present, I have a two year old HDTV that is showing signs of burn in on the screen as well as some other artifacts. It is still under warranty, but the company ( Circuit City) is out of business, except online after it was bought by SystemMax. Unfortunately it sounds as if the Graphics Package has died and it is out of Warranty meaning now it is out of pocket. For $900, you could probably just buy a new one, and there soome pretty good ones out there for that price and less.

I hate to be blunt, but if it is out of warranty, then you likely are not going to get anywhere trying to get them to do anything about it. You will almost definitely be stuck either paying for the repair yourself or getting a new computer...some how.

About the only way they might end up doing something about it is if there was some sort of "proven" defect that resulted in them agreeing to some sort of "extended" replacement warranty. Considering the laptop is now almost 4 years old and you did not mention any indication of some such "extended" replacement warranty by Toshiba, it is likely that no such thing exists and likely will not exist. Usually, if some company is going to that, they will do it rather quickly when all the "complaints" arise...either due to trying to undo a marketing "free fall" or because they were sued and either lost or settled the case. As an example, Apple did "extended" replacement of batteries for their first generation MacBook Pro laptops because the batteries had problems that developed after the warranty ended. They did that largely to quell the marketing problems, but I believe they were either getting sued or likely to get sued, so that likely was a factor as well. But, they did that basically about a year "out" from the release of the computers. So, if Toshiba does not have something similar for your computer at this time, it ain't likely to happen ever.

It may not be fair, but things are not always fair unfortunately.

Sorry to be such a bummer...
