Let me know if i missed a connection type or misplaced a speed....

the speeds are from an average point of view, choose whichever one fits closest

feel free to comment with a speedtest.net report with your internet connection

random question, who's your internet provider?

for me, its a local carrier (telco/power company) and i've got fiber at 15mbps down and 15mbps up

Hey Crazy, Geez, I just ran the speedtest and got a shock. Verizon has increased the speed at some point.

http://www.speedtest.net/result/791846664.png It appears to be 20mbps down and 5 up now.

nice nice

the NC one is the most accurate test to date-
it must depend on the load on the testing servers...
my reported speed is very different depending on which little pyramid i click on

the Ashville, NC server

I think you have 20 mbps service down. Yeah, it will vary from server to server and how it is routed. I can actually get faster times from here to London than I can from here to San Francisco. You get routed into copper with a lot of traffic, it will slow it down some, but not enough to really hurt things. I think it dropped to 11 or 12 mbps when I did the San Francisco server.

Depending on how many have Comcast Service and are online at the time will determine the speed. By going to the Atlanta server, it was probably routed trough a less dense area and thus the faster speed, but that is a big difference.

Wahh! :(
All that is gold does not glitter, Not all those who wander are lost; The old that is strong does not wither, Deep roots are not reached by the frost. From the ashes a fire shall be woken, A light from the shadows shall spring; Renewed shall be blade that was broken, The crownless again shall be king.

Here's mine right now (also from Asheville, NC). It's spec'd at 30 down and 3 up.
http://www.speedtest.net/result/792274684.png

Here's my best download:
http://www.speedtest.net/result/534593661.png

I was told that by October we'll be upgraded to DOCSIS 3.0 and 100Mb/s. I'll believe it when I see it. My only complaint is my low upload speed. Running my server on a 3Mb/s upload is frustrating sometimes.

Hey snyper, Between you and Quack, it seems that Comcast is keeping up speed wise with Fiber, but you still get strangled on bandwidth. That does seem to be a little low upstream. Also, heavy usage by a large number of subscribers wil drop the speed on cable, just like DSL. Been trying to get my neighbor to get off Comcast and come over to FiOS. Posted Image Verizon upped my speed. I almost fell out the chair when I ran it this morning. I had 15/2 and when I ran it, I knew it was 20/5. When I checked the account this afternoon, it was in fact listed as 20/5. It had seemed to be faster the past week or so,

Isn't it nice to get surprises like that?
Technology has come a long way in the years since I watched my dad get on some local BBS with a 300Bd Tandy Modemphone with a TI-99/4A. He even had one modem where you had to take the phone off the hook and set the handpiece on top of the modem. I wonder what my son will be referring to when he says "Technology has come a long way in the years since I watched my dad surf the internet on a crawling 30Mbps Cable connection!"

Well, I will admit to being a cheap ass, and only buying the 12mbit...
http://www.speedtest.net/result/792924458.png
but I would like to point out, that in RL I have been known to see 1.5MB/sec down...

edit: testing the dallas server nets me a touch faster...

Posted Image They'll be measuring it in gbps by then or maybe tbps. 30 mbps would indeed be "crawling" compared to that. I remember those days well and am familiar with those modems and the high cost associated with the internet ( had to pay for the long distance service for one thing).

Oddly enough, I get faster speeds to London than to San Francisco. Yeah, finding out my speed had been raised was a bit of a shock.

btw guys , I came across something interesting recently.... For those of you who are curious - Verizon is now updating the cell sites that will be getting 4g, with 150Mb/s backhaul. All of them. I think this is farily significant, as it shows that they are committed to making 4g what it should be... and just think, 50mbit wireless connection peak bandwidth... that will be nice.

I think Verizon is trying to stay on top of things. They are still building the Fiber Optics. I don't know how far out they'll go, but I suspect it will reach further than cable as it is cheaper to build. Somebody was up working on the tower behind not long ago, but could have been routine maintainance after the winter.

Oddly enough, I get faster speeds to London than to San Francisco. Yeah, finding out my speed had been raised was a bit of a shock.

It's with the benchmarks of The Incredible Machine (which cost $26,000 by the way).
