Fios seems to be acting the same way, only paying for 35 and getting 40+

I believe you are an employee of Verizon. Employees always get perks. :D I am paying for 15/2 and am getting: http://www.speedtest.../1257894215.png They bumped up the speed to 20/5 after 2 years of service. I don't like the new Speedtest.net. I would rather have the freedom to pick my own server instead of the way they are doing it now ( course, I lost my server in Atlanta that I used to use for some reason ).

I knew cable internet is shared throughout the entire neighborhood but didn't know it would exceed the advertised speeds.

That is because the "neighborhood's pipe" has to be big enough to be able to supply everyone with the "speed" (actually throughput is more accurate) they are paying for (assuming the sub-net/neighborhood load is designed well). You all share that big pipe. So, if you are the only one using the pipe, then you have a LOT more capacity available to you and can get speeds greater than what you are paying for.

Think of it as a big water pipe. If everyone is using it, then the fixed amount of water that pipe can serve up gets split up to everyone. If you are the only one using at some point, then you get all the water coming your way. It is a shared pipe...so to speak.

With DSL, it is like you got your own water pipe coming to you directly from the main supply...you don't share it with anyone.

Well rounded explanation :) So does fios work the same way as cable?

You can still pick your own server. Just hover your mouse cursor over one of the white dots on the map and it will list that available servers at that location. Also, if you create an account, you can set your preferred server (creating an account will also keep track of all your results).

See the above discussion by others about fiber, which is what FiOS is.

For me, fiber is that stuff that you eat to be healthy. Out here in the semi-sticks (if I was in the true "sticks" then I likely would not have cable or DSL) where I am, we only got cable and DSL (and dial up and satellite).

I just got Comcast Cable, 15mbps up, I think 1.5mbps down. Speedtest.net said 30 or so up, 3.5 down, something like that - maybe the what-ever-its-called-feature-that-accelerates-your-download-speeds-for-the-first-bit-of-the-download kicked in just for long enough for that to complete. Oddly, I wasn't able to stream a 720p youtube video smoothly, but other things might've been using the network at the time. 480p hulu videos worked fine and hit 5/5 buffer very quickly. My new x120e had no troubles playing both (once I let the youtube video buffer).

It's amazing to think of what we put up with before. Man, now that I have a 1920x1080 screen everything else seems a bit small. I just gave my grandmother my 19" 1280x1024 LCD, and to her it seems amazingly thin compared to her old one (a 17" CRT lol - yes, she never felt a need to upgrade it).

Just added my new fancy-dancy LTE modem to the list today. 15Mbs down at 52ms latency! I think I can live with this. If they would up the monthly limit to 50GB or so, I could replace my FIOS with this, and be happy.

One thing is for certain - FIOS has very consistent speed. We just had the FIOS service turned on today - and still getting 43Mb/sec. This is in a completely different city in Texas... darned impressive.

FiOS is consistent as it is Fiber from the source to the computer. No bandwidth issues or the pipe getting clogged, except for where it may transition to copper somewhere along the way. I can pretty much get the same speeds be it from here to Atlanta or here to London. It does slow down a bit if I test from here to San Francisco.

My speed is a blazing 28.8 dialup, the only thing I can get up here.
It would only take me a week to download a full length movie.

I could get dish web but it costs a fortune up here and it a total ripoff.
